Flying to Japan

The gentleman and I are considering a gastronomic adventure to Japan around Easter next year. If I have my way, we will be flying in J. We are both members of all the major frequent flyer programs but more heavily weighted towards Qantas. So flying ex-AUS to Japan, who do you think has the best J product?

JAL is pretty good if you want direct. Otherwise Singapore or Cathay with one stop.

If you can't convince the gentleman to fly J -- and frankly I wouldn't for a flight to Asia -- think about PE. I flew premium on Qantas to Tokyo and thought they were a really good product for a flight of that duration. It's sufficiently long to want to avoid Y like the plague -- however, not sufficiently burdensome to privately necessitate J.

Pack comfortable walking shoes -- I found Tokyo exhausting. So many steps everywhere -- and I was about 35 years old and fit!

Too right!! I'm a fit and healthy 19yr old male.. But have been to Tokyo several times now and the amount of walking i have done seeing soo many different things is astonishing. I feel as though my legs fatigue and stiffen a lot quicker due to the fact that all the walking is done on hard pavement.. (I don't know the science?? But thats my view anyway..) I think i am going to carry a GPS next year and record a couple of the days to see how far i actually walk!

I have only flown in Y on QF (SYD-NRT) I haven't had any problems with the duration, however if you have the ability to do it in Y+ or J on any carrier go for it!

Wise choice for Japan & the gastronomic adventure! You will never be disappointed.. Beautiful country with absolutely wonderful food... As for the J option.. IMO I would either choose JAL or QF, notably for the direct service option. It is relatively comfortable for the 9 hour flight & JAL would be a pleasant intro to the impeccable service & delicacies of Japan..

I'll be in Japan in a couple of weeks for similar aspirations... so will post a TR at some stage for you to view if you wish..

A TR would be great! I love food - I'll read about anything if it involves food - good food preferably! I read a lot of the TRs on here, I find it all interesting.

I think a stopover would be good as I'm based in Melbourne so can't get there directly. I was thinking about going via HK, so I can go there and Macau (the gentleman hasn't been to either). Plus, the flights back from HK arrive early a.m., allowing me to go to work that day and the flights that go via Sydney don't. I would probably prefer to fly QF but I know some of their J product is better than others and wondered whether going CX could be a better option or whether JL is good - hence the question

I don't have an agent at all - I'm interested to know why you ask the question - you feel they can offer good value when booking J?

So I know I need good shoes - and maybe need to do some training!
