My wife and I areflying through canada/usa and will be using a number of different airlines

Air Canada, UnitedAirlines, Delta.

I have FF with bothQantas and Virgin. Delta should be easy - give them my Velocity card at checkin I guess?

The remaining twoare both Star Alliance members. Is there a way to sign up for either Air NewZealand/Singapore Airlines and then have the points credited to those accounts, and then transferred into Velocity?

What would be thebest way to maximise points/status credits?

You cannot transfer points to Velocity, best bet would be to have a look at a Star Alliance program where you can use the miles or top them up to be usable later on, Taca Lifemiles and US Air both have programs that have special promotions to top up at low cost to redeem cheap J flights.

Unfortunately i'm very unlikely to use either of those airlines, except perhaps in a codeshare (will need to investigate what airlines they codeshare with)

I'll probably need to look at Singapore Air, or Air New Zealand, as those are the two I may fly at some point.

The point is you dont need to use those airlines to take advantage of them and their offerings, 19500 TACA Lifemiles will get you one way in J to Asia with TH or SQ (with around $400 copayment). You can use US Air miles to upgrade Star alliance flights as well ;).

As I am flying with the missus - do any of the star alliance FF programs allow family pooling?
