I'm thinking of taking a television with me on my next VA flight.
It would be placed in a large auspost parcel bag with lots of bubble wrap etc.
It would also be in my included luggage allowance as its dimensions are within that of check in luggage.

My question is what would be VA's responsibilities in terms of carriage and damage etc.?

Many thanks,
J

28 inch corner to corner.

I suspect the answer is 'none.' Surprisingly, Virgin's conditions of carriage prohibit "electrical or electronic components" in checked baggage:
Conditions of Carriage | Virgin Australia
18.5 Baggage – All Travel(a) You must not pack the following items as Checked Baggage. Your right to recover damages for their Loss or damage will be limited under the applicable international Convention unless the items are identified to us and we have, in our absolute discretion, given our written acceptance for carriage and accepted liability in writing for their Loss or damage:
...
vi. electrical or electronic components eg. computers, cameras; and
...

I'm really just curious, but why would you need to bring a 28" TV on a plane? They can be bought for peanuts these days?

It's a smart 3D TV, so not exactly peanuts.
And I'm in the process of moving house.

Anything to avoid a 10 hour drive!

It's not quite the same but my parents have done this a bit as they live in Moranbah (though fly into MKY) and have usually bought electronic goods in Sydney/Brisbane to avoid the 'miners tax' that appears on goods in Mackay. It's never been a problem in terms of getting them to accept the goods as carry on.

Getting them to be responsible for any damage is very unlikely though, so you proceed at your own risk. That being said my parents find that by packing properly even fragile items can withstand anything an airline can throw at them. They usually offer a 'fragile' sticker, but that pretty sure doesn't count as a legally binding document.

Incidentally I have another friend on the Gold Coast who bought a large cane daybed on eBay from Melbourne. She couldn't find a courier to do it for anything less than an exorbitant price, and it turned out she could put it on Jetstar as oversized luggage. Think she said it cost her $27 (and she wasn't even flying).

From my observations, baggage handlers live by the motto, why place it when you can throw it. Even bundles of newspapers get dropped onto the conveyors. TV set ? No way Jose.
