On a recent AA flight they were handing out business cards for a free internet service that applies to Mobile devices other than Laptops. The card was titled Redeem In Flight on Gogo equipped American Airlines flights on mobile passes $7.95 or less.

I used it on my iPhone and the service worked just fine though the initial login was a bit fiddly. The details:

How to get free inflight internet sessions on your mobile device:

  1. Select 'gogoinflight' as the wireless network and launch your browser
  2. Sign in or click 'View Plans' to create a new account
  3. On 'Order Summary' page, enter promotional code (case sensitive)
  4. Click 'Update Total' or 'Next'
The code is MOBILE2009AA
and it expires 12/31/2009

T & C apply.

Offer expires: 18 Mar 2025

I've installed a User Agent disguiser plugin for Firefox for when I fly in a few weeks, 'cos I'm quite sure that's how they'll do it (if at all). Of course, there's a very, very good chance I'm wrong :)

You can do that in Safari through the develop menu. I can't think how else they'd know.

Unless they do a system info check or something?

Your browser sends a header which does have ID info. This could be disected to determine if you are using a computer or not, however I suspect this may simply be an honesty system.

Mabye this is in response to VX offering free wifi until the end of Jan?

As penegal retweeted for someone else on Twitter:

Cheers Sam, I was going to post this when I got home, but you beat me to it.

I haven't tried it yet, but Gary is generally accurate with this stuff.
