HI,

Just wondering of the wisdom of this strategy. If a passenger has an international Y flight on QF but not Qantas Club access. Would it be possible to purchase a full J fare on credit card, use the lounge access then cancel the J fare for a full refund?

Why not buy full F and get access to the F lounge and take a massage?

Nope. because to to enter the lounge you'd need a boarding pass, and once you've got a boarding pass, then you can't really cancel now can you??

If it is refundable you can

Also best not to book over the phone and incur a $50 booking fee ;)

I'd still be wanting to read the Qantas fine print before suggesting anyone actually do it.

The worst case would be a credit of the fare for use on "future Qantas services."

I got this fromthe website.

Qantas said:
"This fare may be used as credit towards the payment of any higher fare from the point of origin, provided the new fare conditions are met. If the new fare is cancelled the original fare cancellation conditions will apply. This credit must be used within 12 months of the original tickets date of issue."

If its J domestic, then the fare would be refundable, but who would waste their time stuffing around and waiting 6-8 weeks for a refund just to get QP access.

If its an intl J ticket, there would be cancellation fees higher than the cost of the QP.

Personally i'd just pay for QP membership.

Book a one way First class ticket for SYD-LAX on AA and you can get a ticket with no cancellation penalty quite easily

I'm clearly missing something in this discussion.

To get access to the club you need a boarding pass, therefore the ticket is now "active". So, when do you cancel? Sitting in the QP with your "Y" boarding pass??

Yes, then once past the gate and had your "Y" pass scanned. You put it in your pocket and show the now refunded "F" boarding pass at the door of the plane :D :D :D

If it's fully flexible, you can make the call to cancel when you leave the lounge as you walk to the aeroplane which you are actually flying on... or if you need to do it again soon, then just rebook the 1st class ticket for the next date which you need flounge access

It can be done...whether it is worth doing is another question

Dave

This has been done before. ISTR one punter doing a rebooking online in the QP and find the fare had changed and required an additional $2!

There's an FT thread regarding one infamous member who did this with a First Class SQ booking ex MEL - gained access to the SQ Flounge with a guest or two before canceling.

I'll try and find it.

Here's a reference to it: FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - FC BP options for lounges in Melbourne?

... After some Moets and snacks in the SQ F lounge in MEL, Rudi and Gisela safely boarded, and THEN I went to cancel my F ticket and sneak out of It'l terminal , get to domestic and fly home to SYD. Entering It'l in MEL (and SYD) means the full passport, customs and immigration dance, so this took some time to get OUT and I gather is very seldom done. The fact I had no hand or checked baggage at all other than a large box of Swiss Chocolates confused the issue. :p ...

Ok I enjoyed reading those threads and it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle just for lounge access but then...I started thinking...

1. Buy 1 x Y seat at the best price
2. Buy full fare F seat on the same flight

3. Perform OLCI for both seats, ensuring print 2 of the same F boarding passes.

4. Check-in and clear customs with the Y BP.

5. Enter the F lounge with the F BP and enjoy.

6. On leaving lounge, cancel the F seat and pass the gate check using Y BP.
7. Board the aircraft using F BP and go to the (now) unsold F seat.

At what point they print the customer manifest and the FAs would notice a body in that unsold seat.

I know I wouldn't have the nerve to pull it off and enjoy the ride, but others might. I'm sure that they would have a system tocover this...wouldn't they?

I dont think you can OLCI for int'l flights thus cant OLCI for any F flights.
