Hi,

I currently hold a gold charge card and a basic DJS credit card. I understand there has been an offer of a free Platinum Edge "companion" card as long you hold your gold charge card. Is this offer still around? I'd called Amex about it about a month ago and they were clueless. Has this offer been withdrawn?

How easy is it to do a product switch? My current DJS credit limit is sufficient. I'm assuming as an existing customer, I won't get a sign on bonus but will get the free domestic flight each year?

I asked about this when downgrading from the Platinum Reserve to the Platinum Edge as I had a complimentary Gold charge card with my Platinum Reserve. My interest was in keeping the charge card as it's handy for large pre-authorisations at hotels etc.

I was offered the Platinum Edge as a complimentary card if I made the Gold charge card my main card account after getting rid of the Platinum Reserve. With the Gold charge card as your main AMEX account, you have to pay an additional $80 to sign up to Membership Rewards as this does not come free with the Gold Charge card, even if MR is a complimentary feature of the Platinum Edge card.

So it costs $210 all up ($130 + $80) to have a Gold charge card if you want MR points, which presumably you do. At the time the Platinum Edge card only cost $149 so I ended up cancelling the Gold charge card altogether, leaving the Edge as my sole card account with AMEX (as I'd since learnt that the grass can indeed be greener with other financial institutions). But I understand that the gap has narrowed considerably since as the Platinum Edge fee has since increased to $195 p.a. for new applicants so might still be worthwhile if you can find some use for a Gold charge card.
