This may be common knowledge - but I haven't seen a post about it. Apologies if so!!

I flew Broome to Perth last Thursday evening on VA1488 which was a 737 rather than the usual Fokker 100. Checked in online and was happy with row 3. I had noticed previously that no J fares are sold PER-BME-PER - and just assumed that J would be empty or allocated to folks with status.

On boarding the cabin crew announced that the flight was very empty so people could swap seats after take off - as long as they returned to their original seat for landing. They also made it known that the toilet up front was available for all. At this moment I noticed that three backpacker types were in row 2 J - and looking around in amazement. Seems they had just been allocated the seats, and whilst I wouldn't jump to conclusions normally, the number of happy snaps they took would lead me to believe they didn't hold any sort of status.

So after take off I asked one of the crew nicely if I could relocate to row 2 - he said 'why not!' - and I swiftly relocated myself.

A 737 comes up here a few times I week I believe - and I assume perhaps to other regional areas too. So perhaps it is worth keeping an eye and calling up and asking to be allocated rows 1 or 2.

This happens on MEL-LST. A 737 is used but no J sold so status pax can select J seats as Y.

Also BNE-ROK, VA don't sell J on those legs, WPs can select row 1 and 2. When I do those flights , I avoid the ATRs ;)

Similar situation on the Ballina Sydney route. As a platinum I always get to choose rows 1 and 2.
