Free wine? Or free flights with expensive wine?

A little tip that hopefully others can find useful.

I don't have many Qantas points, as all my credit cards and Flybuys are linked to Virgin Velocity.

Need to get from near Canberra to Melbourne on Saturday 25 November to catch and Etihad flight to Dublin (thank you Virgin Velocity, although the charges add up to $500 per person, so it's certainly not free.

Virgin's schedule on that day is terrible - the only flight that would get us there in time for our 4.10pm international departure, is 6.45am, which would mean getting up at about 4am.

Qantas schedule is better, and flights were going to be $160 each for a basic Economy fare. So I looked at options for getting it for free.

My quest took me to Qantas Wine, where there are cases of wine that come with up to 30,000 bonus points. Okay, they cost $700. But one case of very nice wine later, plus topping up the petrol tank at BP, and I have two Qantas Business Class tickets*, for a very pleasant (and not before dawn) start to the overseas holiday, my first trip since before the pandemic began, and timed to coincide with my mother's 90th birthday.
* I think there was something like $67 fees on each of the tickets, same as for Economy flights with points.

I think the sums add up.

Anyhow, it's a nice way to rapidly boost your points and get some very good (but slightly overpriced compared to other retailers) wine. We'll be eating and drinking our way through the lounge and the on board menu, to maximise the value we extract.

once you are PC (points club) you can get 19xx_ points for $378 dollars for 12 bottle cases. You can average it out at 50 points per dollar plus the wine. If you elect for 6 bottle cases you can do slightly better.

TLDR: 150k points to get to and retain PC will cost you $3000 with 12 cases of wine and a return trip to asia each year. Bargain in anyones book. The entire best wine i have ever tried

Heirloom Vineyards - Heirloom McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

Is the flight compulsory?

I hadn't heard of Points Club before. It gives quite a few perks, and of course you also get to use the points! Some of the perks have a cash (vouchers) or near-cash (lounge access) value.

I would have to buy quite a lot of wine to get there, but hmmm.... There's a good ANZ Platinum credit card sign-up offer, but I already have the Velocity version so probably am not eligible. (Same with AmEx.)

My The Grand Red Dozen IV cost $708 can came with 30,000 points. So far the wine has been good. We are rationing it. This case of wine has now sold out.

Ill be dropping from PCP to PC next year and in turn losing my 10%.
Im guessing the day before i flip i can buy my last load of wine (about 2k worth) with the 10% discount and then collect the points in the new year right? This would delay the inevitable loss of PCP and the 10% discount another year.

You also scored $100 off a hotel stay, voucher will hit your inbox in November.

Hope you also used the FIRSTORDER code for an extra 5k points!

Damn, I didn't know about FirstOrder. Do you think I can claim retrospectively?

Nor did I know about the hotel voucher. Are you sure about it?

I was just doing some maths.

Assuming the best wine deal right now with PCP (10% discount). Earns 20k for $378. It costs 16k+ taxes to fly SYD <> MEL on Rewards. So in this case it would be $303 +82 or about $385. $385 return on QF is actually ok value for SYD <> MEL and that doesn't include the wine.

So you can definitely get value if you get better value wine deals or higher airfare rewards. Caveat is of course you need to find flights on CR.

For economy flights it's not as attractive, but Businesss is another story. The cheapest Business fare on the flight I wanted was $950 one way, or 18000 points (roughly). I had a few thousand points already, so a $700 case of wine gave me 30,000 bonus points plus the regular points for buying wine...

Would I only receive the $100 hotel voucher if I used "FIRSTORDER"? Nothing yet from Qantas this month...

See the screenshot upthread, vouchers will issue 15th November. This was open to all, no promo code required

Well done!

The 28.3K points I got from dropping $430 on a dozen Yalumba went a long way to an F award from MEL to FCO on EK via SIN and DXB. Very much looking forward to bottomless Dom vintage champagne for almost two days, as well as playing the Great Wine Hunt in the EK Flounge in DXB. Yes, the award was 227.5K points (and $1.9K *gulp*), but that's basically a couple of credit card churns and a case of wine.

(Is it a worry that I now price classic rewards by their cost in credit card churns and cases of wine? 🧐)
