HI Guys,

Am flying to Tokyo late september with work and am being booked on a Premium Economy ticket via Sydney (Ex Mel). I am being sent to Sydney in the morning on day of departure to attend meetings in Sydney during the day and then leaving on the 9.30pm flight to Tokyo that night, same itinerary, just booked as a multi city instead of a direct return flight from mel (to get the earlier connection up to SYD). Question is, will the check in agent in melbourne be able to check my bags right through for me when i check in at Melbourne or would i still need to collect them in Syd and either pay storage or lug them around with me due to the big gap between flight times?

Also, are the 747's on the Tokyo route 'A380 style"?

Hoping someone has some experience in this :)

Thanks !

You should be able to simply check in with your bags in MEL. You should not see them again until NRT.

Use the special "domestic connection to international" counters.

DO NOT mention to any QF staff you are leaving SYD between flights at any stage.

The NRT aircraft are the three class as this stage as a majority, occasionally 4 class and there have been two refurbs operating a service this month (one was the next destination for the Olympics charter aircraft after it bought the team home). Your set map should give you an idea whats scheduled, if its a 4 class look carefully. The route tracker on Qantas Source will give you historic trends while seat maps show expected aircraft type, which if course is subject to change.

Thanks for that! Will check out route tracker for sure, awesome idea!

I looked at the seat map and its got 6 rows on the upper deck, so i assume that means its the Planes with MK1 skybed meaning no refurb plane all round (Vers. other seat map having 5 rows and 4 rows up top) ?

All 747's do have Mk1 at least though dont they if i was to put an upgrade request on? Would hate to be given the old recliner !

Am not flying til Sep 20 return 28 so planes will prob def change, but guess at this stage its the old school 747!

The only thing that puzzles me though is the fact in the front old First Class Cabin which looks like it is now Business seats, it has 2 rows of 2 business seats in the middle not the original one (on expert flyer) - havent seen this before, seems a little od? Sep 20 SYD-NRT

Yes, 744's have either Skybed Mk 1 or Mk 2 for business class.

Is that config on Qantas.com or Expert Flyer?

If Qantas.com and there are only 14 seats in the nose then you have a 4 class configuration - those 14 seats in Zone A are indeed lay flat old style first class seats and are being used for Business PAX - grab one while you can!

If Expert Flyer, then if you see both 3E/F and 4E/F then 3E/F actually do not exist.

Hi Serfty,

My 747 going to NRT is the usual 3 class J Y+ and Y used on the route. However my return flight NRT-SYD QF22 on September 27 i see has a first class cabin. I am currently booked in to Premium Economy on that flight and am currently sitting in 23F (which is clear is a J seat , one of my favourite on this plane actually). Before choosing this seat, i put an upgrade request on, which is still on. What i am curious about is, if i get the upgrade would i then sit in First class part of the plane or is this a complete waste? I think ill keep the upgrade request on until t-24 in case of a aircraft change, but if at that stage the plane is same and im still in Mk1 and wont get to First i would remove it?

Secondly, i hear in these situations you still get the service you paid for? How do the flight attendants go about serving Y+ meals and wines to some and J to others in the same cabin?

It's the old "Kangaroo Configuration" - You'll find rows 23 to 27 (Zone B) seats are designated PE and all get the PE service [with Skybed Mk I]. Business is only the nose (Zone A) and upstairs (Zone F).

Note that those in rows 34-37 have PE seats with economy service.

If you did get upgraded to business you may have a chance at Zone A seating or otherwise you get Zone F. What is your status? (There's an E/F seatmap below - all but four 'first' seats are pre-allocated)

IMHO, for an overnight flight like this the 'seat' not the food is the most important

Oh ok yeah i understand now. I am Platinum, so high chance of upgrade. From that map you show, theres only 4 in F Cabin free? So chances are slim being 1 month out now i guess.

Would you agree its probably best i keep the request on for now so i stay in line and in case they change the plane which im sure is a big possibility over next 30 days? If the plane wasnt changed around 24 / 30 hours prior departure (would i tell by checking on EF what plane left Syd for NRT the night before? ) then i misewell just save the points as its basically a sleeping flight anyway and 30,000 points is a lot to drop for an extra course of dinner! haha

Hey Serfty, thanks for that info earlier. coming closer to the flight dates now, i notice business cabin filling up so wouldnt get the first class bed if upgrade processed anyway. Flight is 27/9 qf 22

Ill keep my upgrade request on in case of aircraft change, but will cancel once i know for sure that the aircraft with Y+ as sky beds is being used. Would i be right in assuming that QF 21 that lands the morning of the QF22's departure is the same one used ? So in theory i could check what plane they are departing SYD on the night before and if it is in face still the 747 with First class i could safely say by droppin my upgrade i still get the sky bed?

Hope that jumble of sentences makes some sense ! :S

There has not been just one instance this month where the inbound operating aircraft has turned around and operated the same flight out.

OT but related to Post # 9.
Our Feb 2013 seat map is a bit different for QF22 Zone A.
Rows 1-3 are: AB & JK
Row 4 is: AB EF JK
Is this still old First config?

(Have selected 3AB)
