Ok - so bought mum a Galaxy Tab 3 7" for reading and basic tablet stuff (maybe a movie on the plane etc).

I have no idea about anything remotely Samsung. I like my iPad myself.

Any tips or tricks I need to know about?

This whole new interface/android business is hurting my brain (I haven't had any Taittinger today).

Santa bought me a samsung galaxy great tablet I have the slightly bigger 8 inch. Good size for movies email photos etc. Yes android is a little different but far more flexible than the fruit machine. If you run out of memory buy a micro sd card think mine is 64 gig it has about 100 tv shows and movies on it.

Oh my  that was a genuine mistake, I would never recommend moving to iOS. See kids, the danger of blind copy and pasting..
Closet iOS lover ;)

I'll freely admit i'm more iOS than Android. And yes, my desktop is also Apple (Windows just lost the plot and I swapped over 10 years ago and never looked back, and I use unix shells a lot, so it actually works better for me, but i'm a unique case overall).

I know of a lot of iDevice users who have said 'F you Apple!' and moved to Android. All but one of them are back on iOS devices, and the last one will be when a larger iPhone comes out (they love the large screen of their Samsung Note, but hate Android).

I use Android on many handsets as part of my job, and it drives me nuts. Lack of UI consistency is my main gripe. It's come a long long way since it started, but it still lacks the coherence and polish of iOS IMHO. Google has done an amazing job of pushing their OS out to manufacturers as a standard, and in doing so has a healthy stipend now due to licensing fees on every handset made.
