Hi all

Made a trip with the missus and our 11 year old to Thailand over the Easter period 23/03 to 07/04 and for the first time in 28 years, I flew on Garuda. The last time was in 1985 when I was a backpacker doing the trip back to the motherland (UK). Got to see the world for the price of a return ticket. From memory, I think Garuda would stop at Denpasar, then onto Hong Kong or Singapore, from there to Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt or Zurich and finally London. The flight, I recall, was eventful due to the plane landing in Abu Dhabi and requiring some spare parts before taking off again, which needed to come from Singapore. We had a nice stopover as a result - all expenses paid.

This time round, I was impressed with the many reviews I'd read about the revamped fleet and in particular, Garuda's executive class which also seemed to be good value for money. We paid on average $2,100 per ticket. I was also pretty happy with the flight times, 11:30 am Sydney departure, approx 8 hrs flying time on an A330-200 to Jakarta with a 1.5 hr wait in the lounge at Jakarta before a connecting flight to Bangkok on a 737 (800 I think) which took around 3 hours. The return flight would be departing Bangkok around 5:30 pm on Saturday on the 737, again stopover and connect to the A330 in Jakarta (wait about 1.5 hrs), and finally the red eye flight back into Sydney with a landing time of approx 0930 the following day (Sunday).

We love the business class experience when travelling right from the moment of arriving at the airport. This was no exception as we lined up at the biz class check in. The wait was very minor. We were allocated row 1 seats and issued with Express passes as well as lounge invitations. Garuda uses the Qantas business class lounge at Sydney which is a great bonus.

Sydney Biz class lounge is great and the service is awesome. There is one guy who works there (name escapes me) who is the consummate 5 star service professional. Every time we use this lounge, he takes the time to recommend from the menu, arrange table service and drinks, and seems to be a genuinely nice person. A great ambassador for the airline I think.

After our sojourn in the lounge, we headed off to the gate in time for boarding which had just commenced. We had a good view of our home for the next 8 hrs from the departure gate. Inside we were directed to our seats and promptly offered the welcome on board drinks. At this point, I'll handover to the pics from here but suffice to say, the quality of the service and the overall flight was as good as most south east Asian carriers, which is to say better than most carriers worldwide. The cabin appeared clean and looking new and the food was most acceptable. I've head a few complaints about the IFE but for flight time, the programmes on offer were more than enough to keep us occupied. No complaints from us. All in all, I would have absolutely no hesitations in recommending Garuda as a good value for money alternative - as long as you are happy to accept the connecting flight in Jakarta. The Biz class cabin was split into 2 cabins with the second cabin being completely empty and the the first cabin occupied by ourselves and another 1/2 dozen passengers. Anyway...over to the pictures.

...and the next
The garlic bread was a great touch and we were disappointed on the return flight to find they did not serve it!WP_000308.jpgWP_000309.jpgWP_000311.jpgWP_000312.jpg

That is how I like my coffee!

The young man always happy when receiving impeccable service and attention!

This was the second Biz class section of the plane - completely empty! How do they make money on these flights, I wonder?

Self service snack bar which frankly I don't think got touched as we were all so stuffed from being continuously served with food throughout the flight.

Here is the lounge at Jakarta with a nice view of a retro looking Garuda paint job.

The lounge at Jakarta was fairly modest in comparison with Sydney's flagship but served the purpose for the short stopover.

For our return flight, Garuda shares the Bangkok lounge with other airlines (cannot remember which). The lounge is massively large and broken up into 3 sections: a food section; an internet / TV section; and a sort of relaxing comfy leather chair section. Seemed a bit weird and overkill especially as there were only about 6 or 7 passengers including us, using the lounge. The location was extremely convenient though. Just walk out of the lounge, turn right and you are moments from the departure gate.

The return flight from Jakarta to Sydney overnight used differant seating to the original outbound flight. I'm guessing that's because most pax just want to get the lie flat beds into place and go to sleep. That's exactly what we did and even more impressive was that we all slept very well on that flight, waking up to the breakfast service and then preparing for landing into Sydney. The IFE used the pop up screens similar to QF biz class on A380.

You may be wondering about why no pics on the 737 flights - sorry about that, my bad. FWIW, the 2 shorter flights, CGK > BKK and back again were both impressive and carried the same level of south east Asian service. The seats were standard short haul business class seats and the IFE held the same on demand programming as did the longer haul flights.

Wow.. It's lovely to have a lonely lounge like that at times...
Such a contrast to the overcrowded DOM lounges in Australia.

All in all, we were very pleased with the choice of carrier to Bangkok even with the connecting flights in Jakarta. Our holiday began when we got to the airport and the journey was a pleasure thanks to Garuda's much much improved quality of service and its young fleet of planes. Would be use Garuda again? Definitely while the value for money option is applicable. Thanks to this forum, that is always under scrutiny and I've saved a lot by reading contributions from the many kind people that share here - thank you for that.

In fact, our next trip in September is due to the AA mile redemption offer earlier this year. We fly SYD > SIN > CEB on QF and SilkAir and coming back SilkAir and Singapore Airlines. It will be our first time on SQ A380 Biz class and I don't mind telling you I am already excited by that prospect.

On another note, while in Bangkok I took my son to the Flight Experience. This is the Boeing 737 flight simulator (also available in Sydney). It was a great experience and I thoroughly recommend if you're a fan of flying and at $100 cheaper than the same experience here, it is definitely worth considering if you happen to be in Bangkok.

While in Thailand, we stayed at the Sheraton Grande at Sukhumvit in Bangkok - which is my number hotel anywhere. We've stayed here on 4 occasions now and cannot fault the place. We also stayed at Le Meridien in Chiang Mai. This hotel is very convenient for the night bazaar in Chiang Mai and is recommended if like me, you collect SPG points. I also suggest if you stay here to book the club rooms as you get the exec lounge and accompanying drinks and snacks into the deal.

Thanks for reading my TR and hope it gives you ideas for future travelling! ;)

Cheers, Sigh.

Thanks for sharing.

I must say I am surprised by the report. It seems like they are going in the right direction.

Once again, thank you for your colourful portfolio of pictures & your positive summary.
I'm sure that you will enjoy your forthcoming A380 experience & Silk Air in/out CEB is a desirable option.
Look forward to your next TR.
Cheers,

It's my pleasure and the least I can do after using the expertise of people like yourself in this forum. Yes, we approached the trip with a sense of adventure knowing the historic reputation of Garuda was patchy to say the least but the outcome was a great experience. The only drawback I can honestly say is the wait at Jakarta airport for the flight connection back to Sydney. On the plus side, it meant when we boarded that flight, we were definitely ready for sleep!

Hi Jetlagger, thanks for reading. Its a pleasure to give back to this wonderful forum.

Nice TR - thanks for posting.

Have never given Garuda any consideration however, your TR is very enticing.

Are both cabins lie flat bed? Really interesting that they have two J cabin fit-outs as they both look pretty fresh & new.....did you have a preference?

Great TR reports on airlines other than the main players certainly gives us all something to think about when next we book a trip, it may be that on costing alone worth giving them a thought. Can't wait for your next TR. cheers V

I just love your TR sighing - big tick and elephant stamp young fella - Garuda had some fabulous specials in 2012 and I was desperate to try one to PEK or PVG but unfortunately the stars never aligned - hopefully 2013 I will get over the line.

Hi amaroo. Remarkably, both long haul flights featured lie flat seats. The seats remind me a lot of the QF A380 skybed "shell seats". The difference was in the way the IFE hardware was deployed and on the return flight this difference did make the cabin feel a little more "dated" than the first flight. It certainly didn't affect our capacity to sleep though. If I had a preference it would be for the fresher looking outbound flight with the bigger screens on the back of the seat in front of you.
