Gday All,

I've just started flying quite often for work which has enabled me to skip through a few levels with Velocity. Now with plenty of points and a Gold status, I should learn how to best use this to my advantage hence bringing me to this side of the internet.

Hopefully I can learn a thing or two from you experienced travellers.

Welcome to AFF LKidner - you have come to the right place to pick up some valuable FF tips, tricks and techniques :)

Welcome aboard. Now relax, and enjoy your flight.

Thanks Guys. Velocity's ears must have been burning today as I finally got my gold card and tag. Still only 400 points to platinum. How do people bloody get that many SC's?

A few ideas in order to achieve just that:
  • Fly internationally
  • Fly for week-ends away
  • Prefer Flexi to Saver when required for work (2x SCs)
  • Pool points & status credits with your partner (& maybe kids) if you can [aka Family Pooling]

I do all of them although not many international flights and it seems to work.
I also keep a table of my past and future trips with their SCs value so I know where I'll be by the time my review is due.

Belated welcome to AFF agouny!

Some very handy advice there.

You are very lucky to utilise Velocity in such a way. Now that VA have a decent network of partner airlines, and points can be transferred to and from airlines such as SQ - allowing one to take advantage of Star Alliance awards as well.

Look forward to seeing you around on the forums mate

Thanks for the wise words of advice. I have already pooled the Mrs points although she doesn't travel too much and also fly Flexi when I get the chance (Mostly return legs from Nth Qld). I've also managed to sneak in a few trips to China, Thailand, Papua New Guinea of late and have a trip booked to NZ for christmas (Return Flexi & Family Pooling). That has helped a lot.

A question to those who are Gold & Platinum, what is the real difference between the two (That you actually use)?

A question to those who are Gold & Platinum, what is the real difference between the two (That you actually use)?

As you're Velocity Gold I'll start with that, although the differences are relatively minor.
Platinum members receive an extra luggage allowance which I have used.
I haven't yet used the 4 free upgrades but will do so later in the year. Note they can only be used on Flexi (not Saver) bookings.
I have used the complimentary partner membership with Hilton Honours - the Diamond privileges are worthwhile.
I enjoy the advance access to seats in the first row of economy.

There are more significant differences between Gold and Platinum QF status.
Access to domestic business lounges and the international First lounges in Sydney and Melbourne.
On arrival access to domestic lounges.
Access to more seats in advance than Gold members but some seats are still reserved for Platinum One members until T-80.
For me the most significant difference is in the benefits available when flying on OneWorld airlines.
Platinum opens up the premium checkin and security lanes with OneWorld which in many European destinations is almost like an airport within an airport.
Access to OneWorld First lounges can make a difference if you're transiting a OW airline hub on the way to Europe.
For example, the CX first lounges in HKG and the MH first lounge in KUL set a much higher standard than the corresponding business lounges.
Of course the same is true if you are transiting DXB - the Emirates First lounge is a whole floor, below the Business lounge floor.

Apart from generally higher standards and exclusivity, a main benefit of first lounges is a la carte dining. Much nicer than the buffet which is usually provided in business lounges.
Different lounges have different additional benefits - such as the sleeperette rooms in MH's lounge in KUL, or the cabana shower suites offered by CX in HKG.

I know similar benefits apply for Platinum Velocity members flying on Virgin's partner airlines but for me they seem a little ad hoc, and people have reported some problems with recognition of benefits.
I haven't experienced any of those problems using QF Platinum status with OneWorld airlines. And to be honest the other OneWorld airlines I have flown with (FI, IB, MH, CX) and even EK have made me feel more valued as a Platinum Frequent Flyer than QF does.

Fly ahead is a great perk for Velocity Plat & Gold, something QF don't offer. Just out of curiosity isn't the OP only interested in Velocity rather than FF programs?. Another offering is VA WP's get 4 pax guaranteed reward seats for international flights. VA SG gets the same but only domestic. I have used to WP guarantee for 4 pax rewards flights to Fiji on the 20th Dec, which is a time there would be little or no rewards available due to peak season. Other options would be Europe, same deal just a further destination. Oh, only economy, so Europe would be too far for me. Btw, NZ,Fiji and Solomon's should be classed as domestic!!

Also excellent reward seat availability on EY J & F for international flight. Europe mainly.
