Hi all

My name's Nat and I'm 27yo from Adelaide. I fly a lot, generally between Adelaide and Cairns. Jetstar are the only carrier who fly direct, so I'm very used to flying Jetstar economy.

A friend recently shouted me a business class trip from Sydney to Adelaide flying Virgin Australia. I was very grateful but I also didn't quite know what to expect. I was so impressed. It was all so fancy, especially when I got to use the lounge. I'm not used to being treated so nicely up in the sky.

Anyway, I loved the lounge so much that I've decided to join the Qantas club (I take approx 20 JQ flights per year and JQ flights qualify for use of the Qantas Club) so I thought it'd be beneficial. I joined AFF and have applied for gold membership in order to qualify for the Qantas Club discount. I don't generally do things like this but I thought it might be a nice treat for myself!

Anyway, I look forward to conversing with you all. If anyone's had any experience using the Qantas Club lounge in Adelaide then please let me know what you thought, I'd be really keen to hear other thoughts/opinions.

Edit: Does anyone know if there's a way to change your username? I was never presented an option, it simply asked for my name..and now my full name is my username. I'd prefer it wasn't.

Thanks! Nat

Welcome to AFF from another Adelaide based forumite.

I think the Qantas Club in Adelaide is great even when its busy, always friendly staff and has the best coffee you'll find in ADL airport.

Hello from Adelaide too. Husband flies Adl - Mel almost weekly and I try play catch up.

The Adelaide QP is good; very large and rarely crowded. It’s usually quiet too. None of the rush of the Mel QP. The coffee is fine. The Baristas are lovely. The food offerings are ok for a snack but haven’t really found much other than that. Might be a function of when I visit which is during the day. It’s just the one lounge for all members except for the Chairman’s Lounge which most people here aren’t able to access.

There are excellent Wine tours organized by Buzzard - the one in 2 weeks is full but AFF is holding its annual meeting in late October so a chance to meet people on the forums. Hope you enjoy. You’ll learn heaps.

Hi from Adelaide too. Glad to see more Adelaide members.

I think that the ADL QP is under rated but that's fine with me. Staff are friendly and polite.

Don't get over whelmed by all the info here, we were all like that at one point in our lives! Enjoy

While the wine tour is full.
The night before function may not be. Check out the meetings and social events thread for more info.
An opportunity for you to meet a number of out of towners.

What is AFF and how can you use it for applying for gold membership in order to qualify for the Qantas Club discount.

Hi Stan, welcome! :)

AFF stands for Australian Frequent Flyer. If you register for Gold membership scheme ($75 per year) then you are eligible for the following Qantas Club discounts:

As of 15 February 2018, the following Qantas Club discounts are available via the AFF corporate scheme:

One-off joining fee: $247.38 (normally $399 – save $151.62)
1 year Qantas Club renewal: $442.80 (normally $540 – save $97.20)
2 year Qantas Club renewal: $803.60 (normally $980 – save $176.40)

It's saving me around $170

Welcome too Nat.

I agree, that the ADL QP is a lot more relaxing than Syd or Melb's - I'm through there a bit on day trips.

Thanks Kook! I'll probably be using it a lot in the morning. It seems like they have a decent little breakfast selection.

I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this, but could you tell me what J lounge means? Is it different from a regular lounge, or does it mean jet lounge or something? I'm not too familiar with the lingo on here yet!

Hi Natt

No such thing as a silly question. J is the Fare Class for Business Class, so they use J Lounge as shorthand to mean the Business Lounge. Qantas run Domestic Business Lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, which are for people flying Business Class or Platinum Status (known as WP - Wanker Platinum). For international flights, your Qantas Club membership will get you into the Qantas International Business Lounge - and some of the others but you would need to check the other threads on that.

Other shorthand if you haven't worked it out, is QP - Qantas Pub, for Qantas Club

See you around the traps

I remember when I first signed up here for Qantas Club, thinking that would be all that would come of it.

Anyway, I loved the lounge so much that I've decided to join the Qantas club (I take approx 20 JQ flights per year and JQ flights qualify for use of the Qantas Club) so I thought it'd be beneficial.

Do you get your 20 JQ flights a year figure from 20 one-ways (10 returns) or 20 returns (40 one-ways)? I ask as I wanted to champion the great value of using the Jetstar Max bundle these days. It wasn't too long ago that a Max bundle cost a lot more than a Plus bundle, but these days, on a route such as the one you are flying it can be as low as $40 more, and for this you get double the Status Credits (SC), about 50% more points as a bronze (more as you gain status), an upfront/exit row seat and a little more flexibility in your ticket (there are a few other things but I feel these are the key selling points for the upgrade).

Looking at your situation, if you were just taking 20 one-way flights a year (ADL-CNS route) and using a Plus bundle on each, you could expect 300 SC, or enough to qualify you for Silver FF status. This in turn will give you a bonus 250 points per flight, or 5000 extra points a year. However, if you were to change to Max bundles on the route (assuming you could always get them for $40 more) you'd spend an extra $800/year but gain 600 SC (with a Loyalty Bonus you'd be within striking distance of qualifying for Gold) and 10,000 extra points a year. As a Gold FF member, your QP would be put on hold until you couldn't re-qualify again, the 600 SC/year would take you over the line in subsequent years and the amount of extra points you'd earn over a Bronze/Plus bundle member would be 22,500 (that's on top of the 16,000).

On one hand, spending an extra $800 a year can seem like so much more than renewing a Qantas Club membership for $442.80 every year, but I would consider the other benefits the Max bundle gives you that makes it seem quite enticing.

Of course, if you're effectively flying double what you posted per my first query, perhaps Platinum is within reach instead and those lovely Business/First class Lounges! :p

Welcome to the world of a points and status junkie!
