Hi everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I came across AFF around mid last year when I first had the thought that I was finally going to take the leap and do my first overseas trip. I'll be heading to LA for a week at the end of May/start of June and across to New York for the following two weeks.
This forum has been invaluable in researching certain items. I joined QFF back in 2012 and slowly built up some points using my Qantas AMEX Discovery card, but once I decided to go to the US and came across this forum, I discovered CC promo bonuses. So in August last year I signed up to the ANZ platinum 50k bonus promotion. It took 1.5 months to make my initial spend and 3.5 months from approval to get the 50k points. This gave my little QFF account a nice boost!
I also came across the 10 points per $1 Qantas Christmas vouchers and bought a $2,000 gift voucher to buy my flights to the US. I bought a premium economy airfare and called the Qantas bookings number to book my flights over the phone using the voucher as I wanted the extended layover in LA and knew I couldn't do that online with the voucher (thanks to the info on AFF). I spoke to June and she was great! I was informed I would be charged the $60 over the phone booking fee and $30 CC fee, however I later discovered the CC fee wasn't charged because of the voucher. So in the end, this was another 20,000 bonus points, plus all the points for my flights!
So with my points, I have requested an upgrade to business class for my SYD-LAX and LAX-SYD legs of my trip. Being a QFF Bronze member, I'm doubting my chances at an upgrade, but have my fingers crossed! I also understand from reading the forum (and correct me if I'm wrong), you get the most value out of your points from a premium economy to business upgrade.
I will go into more detail about my trip in the appropriate threads, but wanted to finally say hello and note how wonderful this community is and the information it provides to people like me. Hope to be a more active member of the community over the coming months and years.
P.S. I have only ever flown two domestic return flights in my life, (one with Ansett and one with Virgin Blue, both to Coolangatta) the last been circa 2003, so I'm hoping my upcoming international flight will be the start of many more to come!
