Hi,

I'm a total noob to the points game and have been mulling, agonizing, contemplating a trip. The long story short, the flight is essential MEL-MNL and then MNL-ROR and TKK. Now I've given up on being clever with points and hacking - I'll pay the cash fare, but.

There are 2x one way MEL-MNL on SQ in J for 93,500 + taxes. This makes my return one way cash fare more expensive, but net net the cash cost is the same. I guess my question is, would you spend 93,500 MR points to fly J rather than Y from MEL-MNL?

I know "everyone puts a different value on points" - I would just hate to think that I'm missing something, however I am rapidly running out of mental capacity with the options, constraints and stresses of figuring all of this out.

Cheers

Entirely up to you. I would be quite happy flying economy and use the points for some other time.

On the other hand MEL-MNL is 2 flights on SQ via SIN so is decent value if that's how you want to spend the miles.

For my July and September trips to Thailand the return airfares were ridiculoudly priced so used points for outbound flights in economy and paid one-way for the return in economy.

See my response in the other thread (UA miles). The ticket should have been MEL-TKK and return ROR-MEL. Side trip between TKK and ROR - or - side trip GUM-ROR-GUM.

That would be the most effective and VFM use of your miles if you can get a round-trip.
