Will be interesting to see what it is, but anything reported by SMH should be taken with a grain of salt

Is that just because you don't like Westpac?

Did you find errors with the amount of $ they say you get? Because they do sound a bit too good to be true at only spend $1,000 a month.

Would have been nice if they had declared what they chose as the value of a point. There could be some variation based on what you choose that to be.

I sent them an email when I read the article asking them how they calculated the values and they still haven't got back to me. I'll be sure to post if they ever do respond ;)

To calculate the total rewards value in a given category, we
  • Divided the number of points needed for a sample of rewards in the category by the dollar value of those rewards, which gives us the number of points needed for $1 reward value.
  • Then calculated how much value you would get from your total annual reward points depending on your monthly spending level, and deduct the total annual fee (including annual card fees and rewards program fees if a separate fee is charged) from the total amount.
  • The result is the dollar return on a card after fees.
We looked at the standard points earned, which doesn’t include bonus points or promotional point offers. Point conversion rates and any point caps were taken into account.

These are the sample rewards we used:
  • Shopping voucher $50 voucher for a department or large store (David Jones, Myer) and $50 voucher for another store (Bunnings, Officeworks). Higher points can be earned by shopping at the retailer: David Jones rewards shoppers with two points within the store compared with 1.5 points outside; Woolworths, two points in a Woolworths-owned store (includes Woolworths Liquor, **** Smith and Big W) and three points for Woolworths Select products, compared with one point outside; Myer, three points in store compared with one point outside (Myer has a cap of a maximum of 2000 points per month earned outside its store).
  • Cash rewards $50 and $100 cash reward.
  • Frequent flyer Total of QFF or Velocity points for four return, economy-class flights spread over peak, off-peak and shoulder seasons, and booked three months in advance using standard-point options without taxes and charges. The flights used were Sydney-Melbourne, Melbourne-London, Brisbane-Auckland and Sydney-Bangkok.

$50 Voucher @ DJs: QFF doesn't allow you to redeem for DJs gift cards...?
$50 Voucher @ Myer: 6750 points
$50 Voucher @ Bunnings: 7250 points
$50 Voucher @ Officeworks: 7850 points

Points per dollar: 146.67 points per dollar.

I am not sure why you mentioned this seeing as you say at the top of your post

$50 Cash Reward: QFF doesn't allow this
$100 Cash Reward: QFF doesn't allow this

Points per dollar: N/A

and I can't be bothered doing 4 return flights for different times of year ands tuff like that.

So 146.67 points per dollar.
Westpac Earth earns 1 QFF point per dollar.
So $1,000 per month for a year is 12,000 points. This equates to $81.82 in rewards per year. Subtract the $75 annual fee. You've made a whole $6.82 over the course of the year compared to the $118 that was mentioned in the article.

Surely the redemption for Qantas flights isn't going to more than double the amount of rewards you earn in a year. Sure, I haven't exhaustively checked it but I do know that the Sydney-Melbourne flight costs 11,000 points including taxes (8,000 excluding) and can be purchased for as little as $125 (Taxes inclusive). So this works out to about $61.36 dollars made after subtracting the annual fee. $95.44 if you want to exclude the taxes and "convert" the extra 3,000 points to a cash value at the current ratio.

I saw that article online and to my eyes it looked like an ad! It's interesting what passes for News nowadays.

Pretty much. For the short time I was a customer I had problem after problem (mostly small issues, but irritating at the time - not much point in going in to detail, it's boring) - ANZ and American Express have both treated me well, so that's who I choose to do business with.
