With what seems like every other credit card trying to lure you with the promise of FF points, should Qantas give you status based on the number of FF points you have? Perhaps 1,000,000 points should get you silver, 1.5 takes you to gold and 2 mil platinum? Doubt that this would ever happen but what do other members think?

Don't agree, as you noted it is possible to accrue lots of points without ever seeing an aeroplane. However, you can use those points to purchase ASAs which do get you status.

Bum in seat flying should be the only way to get status.

Agree 100%

+1 for me :)

no. If you did that it would be simple to just rank everyone on the number of points they have, once us use them all up then to the bottom of the pile, or those who could afford to accrue would be the top tier. Not to mention the massive liability on the books as some people stopped using the, to retain status.

only way should be to fly, sorts out the actual customers from the boys.

They already give you status based on the number of Status Credits you have ;)

However... you could be onto something in a different light. Imagine an airline that gave you status based on the balance, not total earned. Lots of frequent flyers are wary for holding onto so many points, and spend them to get into higher cabins anyway, but if holding onto a million gave you a higher status level... what would you do ;) as soon as you spend them, you drop :p

Yet we seem to love AA's Million Miler program...

Which has been changing, hasn't it?

Edit: as below.

As much as I would like the top status BIS should be the only way.

Frequent Flyer programs are frequent flyer programs, although more are becoming frequent spender programs, reducing the benefits for freq flyers.

I think this proposal would defeat the whole purpose for which SCs were introduced, which was to distinguish the frequent flyers from the frequent points-accruers.

I disagree but I think it could be productive to have a, more official, revenue based program much like PPS club. I'd say that you could introduce another two 'separate tiers' that can only be obtained through J or F revenue travel. Offer one tier that is akin to Platinum and one tier that is more akin to CL.

Lufthansa once sent me an email for a "limited time offer" to extend my senator status for Euro 2,000. I wouldnt be surprised if QFF did this one day.

The concept of achieving status based on number of points seems to negate the idea of frequent flyer scheme and for those of us who do not use cc with earn rates but stick to low rate ME Bank it would knock us out of the ball park. It would be goodbye QFF in that case (though I suppose we would not be missed being such paltry spenders). We work hard to make and keep our FF status as it is not being in business or having a job that entails OS flying.

I would agree that status should be earnt based on BIS miles. However, the reality is that the FF schemes are more like "currency" these days. You can earn these miles without flying on their planes, you can also spend those miles by not stepping anywhere near a plane. Someone can accumulate enough points by spending on other items, redemme those points for a set of flights, take them, then have whatever status they want and no fly again for a year.

If they restricted the earning and spending of points on BIS miles then there may be some merit in basing it purely on miles.

My view is that status is really only relevant to people that actually fly. Seems reasonable that it should be kept for people that fly, and be based on them actually flying....
