How many properties from those brands are in Australia? I only know of the one in Sydney, Darling Harbour is it?

The rumour has it that SPG Gold isn't anything to write home about. Then again, 50% loading on points is not something to sneeze at when you are a nothing.

I'm not too interested since I am going to get at least SPG Gold for free :)

I don't know if it is a rumour, more of a fact. Nevertheless, the 50% loading and a small increase in upgrade chances are perhaps worthwhile.

SPG Gold ... meh ... in 2005 they comped me for merely telling them I was WP and travelled a lot; may be interested in Starwood properties.

After three stays in which I received nothing extra (other than the additional points) I stopped using them.

I still have a reasonably active SPG account - mainly use it for laundering AMEX MR to AAdvantage (although I did burn 11½K on a "Speciality Select"* Westin stay in Kyoto last year.

*This included lounge access/breakfast for an additional 1½K SPG on the normal 10K.

I've been SPG Gold since mid 2008.

I consistently get upgraded to at least the next room category at my regular hotels, but the 4pm check out is the most valuable benefit to me.

The best upgrade I've received was four categories higher - at W Times Square where I was upgraded from a Spectacular room to an Extreme Wow suite.

My main complaint is that there aren't more hotels under the Starwood banner - makes it harder to go beyond Gold for me.

That was the reason I left SPG for ICHG after the Sheraton BNE went, once upon a time there was a SPG property in all the capital cities except Adelaide& Canberra, now they are hard to find and the developments in BNE and Adelaide are having problems getting off the paper along with Perth going.
