Dear AFF friends

A general warning to those booking a hirecar in Spain.

Goldcar is a popular hirecar option, including for us Aussies booking through Expedia AU as Goldcar seem to offer the most competitive pricing.

However, when you arrive at the desk to collect the hirecar they insist on you paying an insurance excess reduction policy, which, in our case, was more than double the hirecar cost paid to Expedia AU for what was seemingly an all-in cost. After much wrangling they will offer a €1,500 charge on your credit card that is released if the car is returned correctly. However, many report Goldcar often claim on the credit cards for minor things or for pre-existing issues.

There was a constant stream of very unhappy customers all paying the insurance excess policy. They even charged a customer in front of us who had their own insurance excess waiver policy document as he didn't have enough credit on his credit card to have the €1,500 charge. There was a huge queue at the desk as one customer after the other unsuccessfully met their surprise and tried in vain to argue their way around the charges. They just moved on to the next unhappy customer and you had to get another ticket and wait 20 minutes witnessing the melee of others.

Reading up after the event, Goldcar have a terrible reputation.

My advice, avoid Goldcar if you need to hire a car in Spain.

Thanks for the heads up.

Seems pretty standard for the more disreputable rental agencies.
