Well time to hang up the boots and make a change after 28 years.

With all the changes and upheaval at QF I no longer have confidence in the airline, combined with some poor service and the lack of love of premium flyers I have decided to move to the other side. One world status is meanlingless, upgrades well they dont happen, getting FF redemptions are either impossible or a rip off with full points being charged for mixed class offerings.

In addition to all of this I see first class flights offered with connections on JQ but at the same or higher cost? WTF is that about.

Qantas as per a post the other day "The only international airline that no longer flies international".

Thank you Qantas but enough is enough and now I say Good Bye

I suspect that you have summarised the thoughts of a few others who do not quite have the courage to admit it yet :!:

10 to 1 you'll be back within a year;)

I have only been flying with QF for one year and think I will give them the flick in favour of flying SQ. I can credit my first two overseas flights to Aegean and get gold and then credit my points after that to Asiana.

SQ fly out of Brisbane three times a day, QF cannot compete.

The flight attendants on SQ are much nicer on the eye also.

I don't quite get the intl airline that doesn't fly intl comment considering they fly to SIN, HKG, AKL, CHC, WLG, PVG, NRT, BKK, MNL, CGK, HNL, LAX, DFW, JFK, LHR, DXB, SCL, JNB, NOU and I may have forgotten some. But to me that seems like a decent number of international destinations and somewhat more far reaching than Virgin Australia. Every continent on earth.

Fly SYD-PER a bit and have definitely noticed an improvement in service (no doubt responding to competition from Virgin - thanks Virgin :) )

This 'status' year have snared 6 JASA's for myself and 6 for Mrs Paddy and junior Paddy, 5 of which are at peak Xmas times.

Upgrades on SYD-PER come through regularly.

... And now the Emirates alliance.

I'm pretty happy with QF and OneWorld at the moment, have put to good use the collective wisdom of AFF... I'm really happy at the moment in fact.

Still, I'm not a fan of AJ but he might just have redeemed himself this week.

Well admittedly I do not buy international flights anymore as I earn enough FF points for my flight needs, but I abandoned QF for SQ (and *A) for several years ago. The transfer rate from Amex and other cards opened the door there, and I have been a very happy camper in this period. For someone in my position it is way better on earn, burn and availability and so for me it has been no contest.

I do still have about 700K in QFF points though that keep building, mainly due to Everyday rewards, that I will have to get around to redeeming one day though (OW RTW in J by 2). However the re-rating of Amex earn has me re-assessing things.

LTO - there is a huge difference between flying earners and non-flying earners in terms of options for abandoning QF.

no QANTAS jumbos into Britain or the Continent makes me rather glum

but domestically, I'd never fly with anyone else, and that's where I use my upgrades, so as long as they stay in oneworld I'm happy to use Cathay and British and keep harvesting points

it's the domestic business that makes QANTAS worthwhile - which is a shame

You will have the same privileges on EK metal.

Everyone is entitled to assess their own situations.

Personally if Qantas improves their Asian schedules then I am a happy person. I can still use my hard earned points in the next 5-6 years.

If I plan a Oneworld award I will be flying Oneworld airlines via Asia and if I want to fly to Greece ocassionally then SYD-BKK-JFK-LHR-ATH does not sound as silly as some may think.

Qantas will still operate twice-daily flights to London with their A380 aircraft. The transit point for the flights (QF1 & QF9) is just being moved from Singapore to Dubai - so no need to be glum ;)

I'm flying long-haul flights every 2-3 weeks, discount economy, because I work for an NGO. I do appreciate much of what I get as a platinum, and I think qantas staff are a great asset, but qantas are incredibly ungenerous with upgrades. Cathay upgrade to business on one leg of every flight I take. My non-platinum colleague was upgraded to business on the same flight. Tonight's flight is full in economy. No spare seat, no upgrade. I feel like a second class platinum despite a very big budget spent on qantas over each year.

I also fly a lot in Disc Y internationally - something i am not very happy about, but the perks of OWE (WP PG) help out. This year, I have 39 QF and 21 CX flights under my belt - I have had 11 opups this year - 6 on CX and 5 on QF, but both airlines use the same upgrade policy in my experience. If your section is oversold AND there is space further forward, the highest status PAX will get moved up first. As a WP PG, the only pax ahead of me are P1 and CL - neither of which I would imagine spend much time in long haul Y cabins.

I pick my flights (when i have the option) by how full they are in Y, the fuller the better as long as there is some availability in W or J or F, I know I have a reasonable chance of an op up. If there is even one spare seat in your cabin, neither airline will upgrade you (in my experience). This is why school holidays are a good time to fly for high status PAX in Y - most holiday makers will fly in Y which often means Y is oversold, while the J cabin may have spare seats as parents on holidays schlep it with their kids in Y or just dont fly for the holidays.

As for your most recent experience, it is possible that either a higher status pax got the updrade or there were no seats further forward. Being full in your cabin is no guarantee of an upgrade - the other factors have to align as well.
