Dear All

Not sure if this thread is in the correct part of the site, but is anyone able to recommend a good (new) hotel in Wellington for 2 nights at the end of October. It would be my 1st time in this City so I have no idea where to stay. It needn’t be 5-star as I have found new hotels are often better (and cleaner) than old 5-star establishments.

Also, being "last minute" any suggestions on which site to book?

Thanks

I just stayed at the Holiday Inn on Featherston St. It's new, I got a great deal for 3 nights, and it is close to everything. Would highly recommend it.

Just had 3 nights at the Quest Atrium including breakfast (cereal & toast in-room) and Wi-Fi for NZ$130/night. It's a modest establishment that is 5 minutes walk up The Terrace from Lambton Quay, but great value for money.

I would normally do research on wotif.com and then see if the best deals are matched by the hotels direct (they usually are).

Quest Atrium also have great 3 bedroom apartments. Makes it very economical if traveling as a family or small group ( say two couples). It is very centrally located to the CBD. There is a lift at the James Cook hotel across the road that will take you down to Lambton Quay.

While not a good hotel I can certainly recommend against staying at the Accor Mercure Wellington near the University and based on my experience there I'd have a hard time recommending any of their other properties. I'd like to think my experience of a worn out, dirty room that housekeeping didn't visit was an isolated incident but why take the chance? :)

I can also recommend the Holiday Inn. A great hotel! Very helpful staff, nothing too much trouble, and was given a free drink on arrival because my room was not ready. As you would expect, spotless rooms, good sizes too. Location could be a little closer to the main parts of the city (ie where the IC is), but it isn't far at all. I'll just add I stayed in February and it was my first time in Wellington too - location was fine, it's easy to find your way around and back to the hotel. Also there is a coffee shop next door that gives you free wi-fi wth a drink purchase. (It's a chain, I forget the name...)

Out of curiosity, has anyone stayed at the Novotel Wellington? How was it?

+1 also from me for Holiday Inn Wellington. Pretty new, spacious room and nice bed. Friendly staff. They even have a kitchenette on the rooms as well!

I can also recommend the HI Wellington (apart from their rather puzzling translucent-wall-between-bed-and-toilet room arrangement), and the Intercontinental down the road is nice too. Not quite as nice as some of the newer ICs, but likely to be cheaper too - in fact once I stayed there it was cheaper than the HI.

I would not go to the Bolton. 5 'star', but an older boutiquey hotel. Definitely not 'new'.

We stayed at the Intercontinental...lovely bright fresh rooms, and we were even upgraded to a suite. Directly across from the harbour, so great views, and smack bang in the centre of town for good access to shopping / food.

On a recent trip last month, I stayed at the Amora Hotel (ex-Duxton)

I can thoroughly recommend it, right near Courtenay Place and various other points of interest.

The corridors were dingy, but the rooms themselves excellent. Newly refurbished, flat screen TV, nice bed too. Bathrooms not too flash - big in size, but they were not rennovated. They are perfectly acceptable, but just look a little out of place, given the new appearance of the rest of the accommodations.

I only paid ~100AUD per night, very happy.

I've stayed at the Bolton, IC and Copthorne. My thoughts are:

Bolton: Out of the way. It's a ghost town on the weekends at that end of the city. Quite surreal. Far away from the Courtney Place action and the shopping. Very CBD/Government orientated. Not recommended.

IC: Fairly dated, but we had a good stay. Got club room due to Ambassador status. Club lounge isn't that flash, but has the basics. Staff were very good at this property and went out of their way to impress. Great location, smack bang in the CBD, but 10mins away from Courtney Place.

Copthorne: I was surprised by this property. Great views of Wellington city and harbour. Wouldn't get a standard room as these look narrow and cramped. We got a suite and it was affordable ($250 NZD?). Location is on Oriental Pde, so close to Courtney Place end of town. Unfortunately does have glimpses of that "Highway-Motel" feel in places.

In terms of where I would stay out of the three when I next return, would choose in order: IC / Copthorne / Bolton. Theres another one that I want to try next time, Otel ? Looks boutique-y and modern, fairly expensive I think.

I will be staying at the Grand Chancellor in April. Does anyone have any views on this hotel?
