I often feel like getting out of the hotel and having dinner at a nice restaurant, but the reality is it can be hard to find somewhere good where you can feel natural and normal having dinner by yourself, armed with a book or Ipad.

The Qantas in flight magazine actually ran an article on "great places to eat alone" some time ago.

But I'm sure that AFF'ers can put together the ultimate list of dining venues for solo travelers?

Longrain melb and Sydney have communal tables. So does I think the Merchant in Melbourne, en izakaya in balaclava, Melbourne.

I often go to Balti in Georges Terrace Perth.
Excellent Indian (not to heavy on fat, salt cream etc)
Good light for reading a book and usually a number of other solo diners so you never feel out of place.
It can get a bit noisy on a Friday though.

Onde, Liverpool St, Darlinghurst, Sydney (French)
Le Pelican, Bourke St, Darlinghurst, Sydney (French Basque)
Le Bistro, Crown St, Darlinghurst (French)

Sounds like I'm a francophile foodwise, but I'm not, it's just my experience has been these are nice as a solo diner.

La Pesa, Liverpool St, East Sydney (Milanese)
Longrain, Commonwealth St, Surry Hills (South East Asian; communal table)
Sushi Yachiyo, Kirketon St, Darlinghurst (amazing small Japanese place run by a Tokyo couple)
Berta, Alberta St, Surry Hills / Hyde Park (Italian; tables so close together you'll feel like you're dining with others)
Time to Vino, Kings Cross Rd, Kings Cross (wine bar with good Mod Oz food)

Sailor's Thai Canteen in The Rocks has a long communal table, and I frequently see solo diners there.

Chinta Ria - Darling Harbour (coughle Bay), Sydney

Bathers Pavilion, Cafe - Balmoral Beach, Mosman, Sydney

Any decent Sushi establishment
