..and another welcome!

The Swissotel Merchant Court next to Clarke Quay is good, but may be a touch pricey. It depends on what you mean by good value! :)

Are you looking for a clean place to stay with most of the time away from the hotel, or are things like pool and bars important, and are you there for tourist things or business? Its always difficult to determine what is defined as value, some of my trips I have stayed in the Penthouses of the Stamford Crest, other times I have had a budget room at the Holiday Inn using the family and friends rate or at the Rendezvouz, to me they have all been good value for different reasons.

very much enjoyed the Holiday inn park view in singapore, found it good value, awesome air conditioning and also it's been recently refurbished (in the past 12 months)

Value is relative and subjective.

what are you expecting to spend and what are you expecting to receive?

There are many good hotels in SIN.

SPRUCE

I'm new to this, and everyone being v helpful. Looked at a few sites and hoping for something central, including breakfast no more than $A200. a nite staying for 4 nites. Told to check Singapore Stopover site, as v v cheap, and found prices but couldn't get through to book to see how many nites you could stay.

If you can get any hotel near the MRT, a fair proportion of the tourist parts of Singapore are accessible by MRT, and for the parts that aren't - taxis are dirt cheap, honest and reliable so location is not so much of a problem. As well as Clarke Quay, Chinatown, Little India and the Marina area are locations I'd consider as well. When I used to visit often, the only place I used to hate staying at was on Orchard Road and now that I live in Singapore I still only visit there when I feel up to dealing with the crowds!
