Goodbye QF and Hello SQ

Due to the recent safety "incidents" with QF, my family have switched to SQ.

After nominating family members on Krisflyer, how can I check that upgrades are available for certain SQ flights?

I was hoping to check if upgrades were available before transferring my CC points to Krisflyer.

Are SQ upgrades waitlisted like QF international upgrades and only confirmed 5 hours before the flight?

I have asked this question before here and it was not answered so I'd be interested in the answer too!
 
I don't know the answer, but if you get no response I would recommend asking on SQTalk, where all things regarding SQ are known.

Respect your right to make this switch, but I hope you are not just reacting to media hype. SQ have had a multiple fatality incident (2000) that there has been some attribution to a deficiencies in the airlines culture. I have read a few posts on this and other boards questioning SQ's safety standards. (there are a few people who would refuse to fly SQ).

Having said that, I've had 34 SQ flights this year and not a single international flight on QF. They have been more convenient for what I need, and I didn't make that decision on safety grounds, but personally I don't have specific safety concerns with either airline (Garuda, Lion Air, etc ... now that's a different story).

Oh, and sorry can't answer your question about upgrades, but good luck!!

And who can forget the SQ006 incident which resulted in more than 70 fatalities after take off was executed at a runway that was closed for renovations, or the tail scraping incident at AKL when the wrong take off speed was selected after the wrong weight was loaded into the coughpit computers and the a/c was almost in stall speed when it was in the air?

Anyway in regards to your Q:
- Yes upgrades on SQ can be confirmed instantly if available. This can be done before ticketing even. You can waitlist if the upgrade isn't available at time of request.
- I believe you can check for availability by doing dummy bookings online; you can also call up of course but if you redeem over the phone you wouldn't get the 15% discount.
 
And I am sure SQ are not alone in having such a list of "issues". However, the best way of putting it is probably that the it is not in the interests of the companies (or is that company?) who own Singapore media to make a big deal out of this.

THe media is all over QF like a rash to the point where routine maintenance issues now get reported on a regular basis. And let's not forget other airlines also have had their fair share of near misses (BA 777 "gliding" into LHR) or unfortunately no near misses (Spanair, Aeroflot) as the case may be.

Mind you I'd take a plane in many places of the world over road transport any day (if you want to be really scared look at most Asian road tolls!)

I'm one of those who have some concerns about the SQ safety culture & safety record. I most certainly would not fly them in preference to airlines such as Qantas though I would still fly them when appropriate or if necessary but they are definity further down the list than a few others.

SQ, QF and similar airlines are all still very safe when compared to the likes of Garuda.

I specifically studied the SQ culture as part of my Aviation Management Masters degree. There are a lot of very impressive aspects to the SQ culture BUT also some that are way too far out of left field for me :!:

Noting the March 08 A380 incident - due to brakes, i believe Airbus is having problems with the A380 brakes overheating - and not just on SQ's.
