One of the aircraft that was alway easy to remember in the Australian fleet and later Qantas when I was in ATC was VH-TJJ or "Tango Hooks" as she was called often during handoff, sad news to see her go into storage according to QF source, although I know the 734s are not the most likes birds by some . Avalon must look quite busy, almost going back to the days when QF actually made money servicing other airlines birds at AVV.

From Qantas Source

QANTAS News & Information - The QANTAS Source

[h=2]20th October 2011 - VH-TJJ to Avalon Storage.[/h] Boeing 737-476 VH-TJJ positioned Melbourne - Avalon for storage today as QF6114. The aircraft operated its last passenger flight before storage as QF637 Brisbane - Melbourne yesterday.

[h=2]19th October 2011 - VH-OGR to Avalon Storage.[/h] Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGR positioned Brisbane - Avalon for storage today as QF6113. The aircraft last operated in passenger service on 16 October when it flew the QF91/QF92 Sydney - Noumea rotation. It then positioned Sydney - Brisbane as QF6001.

[h=2]18th October 2011 - VH-TJW Positions for Avalon Storage.[/h] Boeing 737-476 VH-TJW positioned Melbourne - Avalon for storage today as QF6112.
[h=2]17th October 2011 - 737-400s Placed in Avalon Storage.[/h] Boeing 737-476s VH-TJF and VH-TJO were placed in storage at Avalon today positioning from Melbourne as QF6111 and QF6121 respectively. This is in connection with the industrial action and overtime ban by maintenance workers

Assuming these aircraft are of retirement age or are surplus to requirements - what is their destiny?

Are they sold to another airline or a wealthy person for a private jet?
Are they used for spare parts?
Do they sit in a desert forever & are forgotten?
Are they scrapped for metal?

If someone's got the Leprechauns phone number, I'll offer him $200K for a 734... plus he can keep the seats!

Best AC in the fleet (of 73's) IMHO

Just call the Jetstar service number and ask to be put through. Calling Qantas will just finding you going around in circles.

The 734s recently pulled are rumoured to be going to another operator.

There seems to be a mix of put in to storage, scraped for parts, converted to freighters and sold to other operators. The aussie airliners website has a good record of all the Boeing 737s that have operated in Australia. They usually have notes about what happened to them once they left Qantas.

Thanks richie9x great reading. Gee, the average bird gets shared around a fair bit

I was on VH-TJF not too long ago; you could tell it was aging but still a nice aircraft.

According to the Qantas Source, VH-TJJ re-entered service yesterday.

It would seem news of Tango Hooks passing was somewhat premature!

Flew AVV-MEL as QF6112 on Tuesday before operating QF448 to SYD. Yesterday morning it operated QF502 SYD-BNE.

Since then it been operating between BNE & CBR and MEL & CBR.

:?::idea:I wonder if it has a special Elite/Pollie friendly seating configuration?
