Grand Mercure Newcastle in receivership/liquidation

Received a phone call today from Accor Hotels telling me the GM Newcastle has gone into receivership effective today and they are no longer taking bookings and canceling all future bookings (I have 4 in the next 2 weeks). Thankfully they are honoring all current guests which is a relief as I have 6 rooms there this week.

The website now shows it as unavailable.

Thats a bit odd, the Hunter Crowne Plaza is also in receivership and taking bookings as was the HI Gold Coast for the last year before it left the chain.

I was a bit shocked that they have essentially shut it down from this week. Nothing on their website except you can't book anything and canceling all future reservations. They were suggesting I book into the Sebel.

Sounds more like liquidation!

I've never stayed there but who the hell thought a hotel of that scale, at that price point, in that particularly sh!++y part of town was good investment?

LOL.

I am surprised though because it actually is pretty good value if you want an apartment with 2 or 3 bedrooms. It is often booked out too - so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why. I'm disappointed it's going but guess someone will buy it and reopen it - hopefully as an Accor again
