I thought it was worthwhile talking about my last trip from syd to adl with qantas in economy. I was traveling with 2 of my kids, 3 and 1 year old. I couldn't believe how helpful the hostie was. I had the baby sleeping on my lap and she dropped off breakfast, opened my cereal, poured the milk and opened my juice saying it's hard with one hand. She probably came to me 5 times during the flight giving me more food for the kids and asking if I needed anything. It was a real shock - has anyone else had positive experiences like this? :p

The last time I travelled in business with the 1 year old I didn't get any help and had to forgo the meal

QF is capable of service like this, but consistency seems the key. I was on a BNE-MEL flight when a hostess provided the same level of service to a mother who had a very young one, but the best thing was she did it with a smile on her face.

I ended up flicking an email to QF, and about a week later QF called back saying due to the email I had sent, the hostess had been nominated for a Qantas eXcel award.

Your right, its the smile and the ability to talk to people rather than serve people that makes the difference. I sent an email to qantas yesterday, hopefully she gets some nice feedback

Thought maybe because I was platinum she was helping me but she was also helping others with babies around the plane

I don't think this is a consistent thing.

If one had a baby, I think the most QF will do at times is smile and give the cursory "Isn't she/he cute?!" remark or something like that. Especially if the flight is short (SYD-ADL isn't short so maybe more time up sleeve).

I'd say the FA was feeling good and did her good deed for the day. Notwithstanding the cynical, kudos to her all the same.

My wife had an FA nurse our one year old so she could eat when she was in J once.

Putting aside problems about them being a complete stranger and possible turbulence problems, it was well beyond the call of duty. Unfortunately, this was a long time before I realised about submitted feedback

I've also had great service when flying with my daughter. When she was a baby, they'd offer to heat the bottle up and offer to bring out meals separately so one of us could eat then swap.
The last trip to SYD (she's 7 1/2 now) the FA kept feeding her pastries as she loved them.

My partner still lives down in Brisbane, so we do a fortnightly flight (either I go down or she comes up) from Darwin.

I always fly Qantas (of course!), but she oddly prefers Jetstar (eff's me why..)

One trip though I insisted she fly QF as I was paying for the flight with my points (I know i could have booked J* but I want her to start flying QF) It was only then that she realised QF have a bassinette on the 767's that fly to Darwin and she didn't have to nurse our 6mth old all the way home on a 4 hr flight. (this also meant she, not even a frequent flier, got the seat next to her vacant, even though it was a busy packed flight).

Women being women though (**bunkers down for the onslaught of abuse for not being PC**), she got annoyed when the hostie cuddled and nursed the baby in the other bassinette on the other side of the plane, for the majority of the flight and not our daughter... I told her to get over it... lol

Never the less, she insists on flying Jetstar from now on... even though they don't have a bassinette and she has to hold bub all the way...Says she hates QF and they're a horrible company... I havent told her yet QF own J*.... :P

Jasecoop, great to read about your positive experience and the great help from the cabin crew. Well done to the Qantas crew.

Actually that happened with my first kid when flying to nz in j. There was only 2 other people in j so they weren't busy but always good to offload the kid for a while

Good to hear about these positive experiences for those with kids!

I'm sure there were men on board who were annoyed that they weren't getting cuddled too :p

One things I will say - Jetstar has better looking hosties!

Although... the QantasLink flight to ASP :D I'm only young myself :P i'm allowed to look ;)

Generally I have found QF very good with kids

I remember when I was a kid flying with QF (not all that long ago...) and it was always great fun (not in the use the cabin as a playground way!). Before September 11, almost always invited up to the coughpit, meet the captain, answer any questions, and things like that.

A pity future generations won't be able to get into the coughpit as often...only a quick peek and only once the flight is over these days...

That is one of the worst things to happen. A friend who flies the 747-400's said they used to love kids (and big kids too!) coming up to the flight deck and that they miss it. I miss it too, I've had some great landings up the front before!

It is good to hear that you had good (great) service.

Sadly though the service I have encountered in economy class and business class (domestic and international) is inconsistent at the best of times.

I hope my next comment does not get misinterpreted but assuming the FA spent time with you and the baby then 3-4-5-6-<insert number here> passengers may have said they did not receive the service they had hoped for/paid for on this flight. Call me cynical but the reason I make this comment is if the service is inconsistent when a FA is simply doing their job and nothing more then what is the service like for the other passengers when they concentrate most of their attention on 1 person?

I don't think you will ever find that everyone get's the same amount of attention though. Do we need or even want it? I think that it's wonderful that the FA had the time (assuming here that other passengers were being tended to just fine) to help out a passenger who could really do with the assistance. Some days we need more from the FA's than others and I think it all evens out in the end.

Yeah, QF can be very good with kids... I took my family (3 kids under 3) CBR - BNE vv earlier this year... The FA's on both flights did all they could to make the trip go smoothly... (and yes I gave QF good feedback)

I agree with the others. When QF get it right, they really hit the nail on the head, to the point that they couldn't do better (there is a certain Y+ flight that I did last year which springs to mind). Problem is that it doesn't always happen, and every so oftan you get a really bad flight (thus the most likely basis of the average comment on nonews)

Aside from the actual assistance, the smile and her constantly asking if I needed something didn't take much time but meant a lot. The fact that she actually cared is what mattered rather than just "doing her job".

It's interesting, almost every flight I've had with sing airlines I have enjoyed. Not because of the seats as I have been on many of their old planes but have always found they go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable, to the point where I have had to say no more. It is possible for most people to be treated well

It's also interesting you say that because I flew SQ 4 times during my last trip. I'm a *G (not SQ*G, BD*G) too, but I found that they were alright. They are polite, do their jobs well and that's it. Probably if I kept squirming or showing signs of discomfort they would ask if I was alright, but I wasn't in any state of trouble. But I didn't see anything way beyond the call or very stunning. In particular, the crew on the late night flight SIN-BNE were like most other red-eye crews IME: quiet and slightly anti-social (after all, they're tired too!).

Me being Asian looking may contribute to this (SQ or Singaporeans are quite polite to people who are clearly tourists; other Asians - well, they know you're "one of them" so big deal). Also, I've learnt to put up with a lot, so even small infractions may not escape my comment but in the grand scheme of things aren't a big deal.

I read the story and took it the other way. There were probably 3-4-5-6 other pax on board who saw the attention and were impressed. I am when I see this sort of service; and any FA who successfully helps calm or prevent an inflight crying baby is a hero to me:D

When the service to others isn't happening it might be more common to be the FAs busy chatting to other FAs rather than attending to other pax.

Cheers skip
