China Eastern offering great J fares to Shanghai - might just have to grab a couple of these instead of burning KF points.MU.jpg

Malaysia Airlines also has great J Companion fares if you're traveling with someone else, must be ticketed by 30 April 2011 and valid for travel till 31 March 2012. They're exceptionally good value to much of North Asia. Eg MEL-KUL-PVG return in J is about $5900 including taxes for 2 passengers. Quite a fraction of the cost of flying SQ or QF! Great option for those loading up on Velocity points and SCs.

Unfortunately we aren't quite ready to book yet so I hope they re-release them for our trip to the W Maldives for Easter 2012 (no oneworld options and no we aren't going via CMB).

Curious to know if anyone has actually flown China Eastern in Business before and what it's like?

I have actually flown them only once before internationally about 4 or 5 years ago.

MEL-PVG was very very ordinary on antique plane - no idea what it was - then PVG-PEK-LAX which was fabulous - brand new plane / fitout - excellent food / drinks / service.

As soon as I can firm up dates I will book one of these flights and post some pics after I return - unless someone else can do so in interim?

Have done quite a few internal flights with them in China - like ALL Chinese carriers - domestic flight quality very ordinary.

The planes are 5 year old Shanghai Airlines Boeing 767-300 ER, that are wet leased by China Eastern Airlines. I will let everybody know when I get back on the 15th may from UK, as we are flying with them.

The million dollar question: recliner or angled lie-flat?

Very interesting, was asking myself the same question, Pudong to Frankfurt is A330-200 with angled lie-flat. But the Tulla to Pudong is Boeing 767-300DER, they have been using B-2500 which was a 2/9/06 delivery date. As to the Business class seating, well if the Youtube video is anything to go on then it will be older style seating. China Eastern and Shanghai airlines are know one in the same airlines since China Eastern's takeover of Shanghai Airlines. China Eatern Airlines is one of the airlines that is waiting on the Dreamliner from Boeing, and they have been suffering in the market place because of the seating. They have increaed their flights in and out of Melb and Sydney. So I image that they will hit the market and and fast when and IF they get the new planes.

BNE-BWN-PVG on Royal Brunei

$699 return Economy
$1100 return Business
Gotta be flexible with dates/schedules but the fares are there.
Queue the usual alcho whingers about not being able to get a drink...

Booked a flight with MU thru Best Flights today - $2,226 plus AMEX fee 4% - the fockers.

May 23 MEL-PVG / 11:00-19:20
May 29 PVG-MEL / 20:15-09:00 +1

Booking shows metal as 767 however Best Flights cannot confirm as they cannot load seating plan as yet - jeez I hope I don't get an outdoor seat - I hate that.

This is one of the problems with the Chinese airlines, and that is that their service levels are very lagging. Seating plan is a very good example, also the poor quality of there web sites in general. They also don't take advice very well, try working with them.

I hear ya brotha - I hear ya.

But this fare is so cheap on the surface - I will post a full report on my return.

Below is screen shot from Best Flights web site.

Have booked another of these MU MEL-PVG flights for June 20 - this time booked it through FC for $2,350

I also joined MU's FF program Eastern Miles

If my calculations are correct I will need to do 4 x MEL-PVG return flights in J then should have enough points to get next flight on points.

Assuming I can get 4 times flights at $2,300 or thereabouts then if factor in 5th on points average cost will be $1,850 approx

Will post report after May 23 flight
