hi all - quick question about hanging up my suit bag during upcoming flights.

I'm flying BNE-MEL (QF625) then MEL-HKG (QF29). Assume I will be in Y for QF625 (though will try for an on departure upgrade) and PE or J for QF29. I am travelling with a soft cloth suit bag containing a suit and a dress, as my wife and I will be attending a wedding on the day of our arrival and I don't want to risk luggage getting misplacd or delayed, however unlikely.

In your experience, will I have any trouble having the cabin crew agree to hang up the suitbag during the flights?

Further - what about staff hanging up the suit bag in the Brisbane J lounge, the F lounge in Melbourne and any F lounge in HKG?

Thanks...

From my experience the hanging up of items (when you are in Y) on domestic is very hit and miss. I would be inclined to try and board at the front of the pack and attempt to ask/explain why you need it done.

The international leg should be OK I would think.

Whilst I don't oftan take suits on planes (usually in checked luggage if I take a suit at all) the few times I have wanted to hang up a suit bag in the cabin I've had no problems... I've just asked a FA \ CSM politely if they mind during boarding. (Even though I'm in Y)

I think it's all in how you ask, ask politely and they'll usually oblige, ask in a demanding tone and the "rules and regs" will be quoted...

I regularly fly with a suit bag in Y and have never not been able to hang it up. I usually just say 'am I able to hang this somewhere?' as I board and they point me to the closet. Much easier than having to stuff it into an overhead locker on DJ where there are no suit lockers at all...

As above, should not be a problem at all. Just ask nicely

On a 767, yes, it's easy, and you don't even have to ask. The suit cupboard is at the front of Y. On a 737, IME FAs have been very precious, and the closet is at the front of the aircraft. I even had a FA tell me there was no closet on board when flying a 737 to HBA.

Update to this...

I flew CBR-MEL-CBR with qantas over the Aus Day weekend. On BOTH flights I was told that there was 'no space' and I should put it in the overhead locker. This amazed me as I have hung it dozens (if not hundreds) of times before without question, including on CBR-MEL flights. On both occasions I looked in the closet on my way past and there appeared to be plenty of space. Why all of a sudden was I denied twice in a matter of days? Bad luck or has Qantas changed their policy on this?

The ability to hang a suit bag is one of the reasons I fly qantas over virgin when travelling with one. My wife has had a dress ripped in the overhead locker before so was suitably peeved after being denied the first time and even more so the second. Yet another differentiating factor gone (to add to the growing list).

Strange, I saw a DJ staffer hang a suit bag from a hook at the back of (737) J for an Econ customer a few days ago. So they can do it.

IMHO, the ability to have a suit bag hung in a plane is not one that should be expected, unless travelling J/F.

Suit bag or suit bag?

I know that for me, sometimes I am only taking a suit bag in which case it has everything in it, including shoes, toiletries etc etc.

Other times I am taking a suit bag that only actually has my suit and ironed shirts.

The weight different is significant. Maybe some FA don't like the former.

As for hanging them, never had a problem with the latter.

Only ever has a suit, a shirt or two and possible a dress if the wife is with me. Weighs nothing and only a few cm thick.

Being based on CBR, the majority of my DJ flying is on Embrarers so hence no suit closets.

Was it a Dash-8 or 737? If the latter I'd complain to Qantas. I did, and you can read about it earlier in the thread. I was told that the CSM was "addressed" and informed in future not to misinform passengers.

I have seen a couple of things happen in domestic - once it appeared that a Y passenger had asked for and gotten permission from an FA at the front of the aircraft to hang her things. When she tried to do so another FA came along and tried to stop her. On other occasion an FA stopped a Y passenger from stowing his suit in the closet, saying "It's not for general use." I feel the closet is a Business benefit and it would look quite poor if it was so full (as can happen) with Y jackets etc that there was no room left those in J.

From what I've seen though I think the OP would be able to use the closet if asking nicely first. Enforcement varies, much like Y passengers using the J toilet :p - we humans can get a lot more territorial once in a pressurised steel tube in the sky ;)

Further - what about staff hanging up the suit bag in the Brisbane J lounge, the F lounge in Melbourne and any F lounge in HKG?

Thanks...

Most of the lounges have an area near the counter where you can store your luggage, but I haven't specifically noticed hooks or rails for hanging items.

Usually they're under-utilised so you should be able to find a spot to lay it flat if there are no hooks.

I had to fly to MEL on the weekend, travelling with a suit bag (containing a jacket only). BNE-MEL on VA (as Gold), and MEL-BNE on QF (as Plat)... this was my experience:

BNE VA Lounge: asked if there was anywhere I could hang my coat and the lounge angel came around and took it from me, and hung it up in the cupboard behind the service desk. She politely said in a playful way "just don't forget it when you leave".
BNE-MEL VA flight (seated in row 5 - had used Fly Ahead so no row 3 available): handed the CSM my BP on boarding. After briefly looking at the BP, she said "if you'd like to hang that up, just hand it to Marcello and he'll take care of it for you". Plane was a BSI 738, so it was hung on the bulkhead behind 2D. Couldn't have asked for more in either situation.

MEL J Lounge: asked the same question and the lounge angel said "hmmmmmmmm... well I *suppose* I could hang it back here, just please make sure you don't forget it when you leave". Fair enough - no complaints there as it was better than holding onto it!
MEL-BNE QF flight (seated in row 4 with a shadow): handed the CSM my BP, and politely said "I don't suppose you have any room in the closet for my jacket?". Was met with a "no, there is no closet on this aircraft type. You'll need to wait until everyone has put their bags up and then try and fit it on top."... This was a 738, so there was indeed a closet... pretending (particularly to a WP that knows QF aircraft layouts and features quite well) that no such cupboard exists is simply poor customer service. I am aware that the hanging of jackets is officially a J service/benefit, and if the closet was full with J jackets I would have completely understood. I would have also happily waited until all J jackets were in the closet to see if there was still room, though from what I could see, only one jacket was put into the closet on the flight (I saw her take it from the pax after I was sitting down, and return it before landing), so there would have been plenty of room... My issue here isn't so much her refusal to hang it (or allow me to hang it - as it's not something I 'expected'), but rather that she flat out lied to me. I'm tempted to flick QF an email, though I doubt they'll really do too much (as even if they do tell her not to lie to passengers as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, she seemed very set in her ways (was an older CSM), so I doubt it would really achieve anything)... a shame really, as I was looking forward to this flight (first QF flight as a WP), and the CSM managed to put me in a bit of a crabby mood before even reaching my seat... the rest of the crew were fantastic though! :)

And before anyone asks - I chose not to challenge her on the existence of a closet by pointing it out or opening it, as her tone indicated she wouldn't have any of it even if I knew she was lying, so I figured there was just no point in making an enemy of the CSM before take-off haha! :)

Just a quick question. Is someone able to list all the QANTAS domestic aircrafts which to have a storage cupboard?

cheers gogo
