Has anyone ever been charged excess Baggage ??

Flew American this morning and saw a couple charged USD$100 for marginally overweight baggage. Pretty poor form imho.

Have never been charged, though have been marginally (=<15kgs) over the limit on various airlines. On airlines I have no status, on each occasion I have notified the TA/ airline in advance and have received at least a 5kg "advance". Even when I was 34kg's on a 20kg limit, QF have said there is no reason to charge because they'd "budgeted for my excess" (kudos to QF amongst others on this matter) .

Call in advance and even airlines can be accommodating.

But always been in F and it seems you can get away with most things in F.

Virgin Atlantic is notoriously bad.
I had to pay for being 5kgs over. The guy next to me, being an amateur golfer, found it cheaper to send his gear through Qantas.

The most annoying thing was that our flight was completely empty. GRR.

I got charged about AU$140 the other week on CX (I think they are pretty strict) as I was 20kg over! oops...

I've been on a RTW trip and have 2 bags. The agent asked me to put both bags on the scales at once - haven't had that before. The allowance was 30kg and I was about 50.

I've always found that you can get away with having excess as long as each bag is within liftable weights (like up to 25kg) - so if each of my bags weighed below 30kg it would be probably be ok - in fact this is what happened for all of the dozen flights I've taken in the last 2 months. But that evil check in guy.........

I realise now I should have reminded him I was travelling in J and that I had 4 more flights booked with CX and that I would cancel them and move to an airline that treats it's premium passengers better than he was doing. But you never think of those things on the spot... at least not the first time it happens to you. Life is just one big lesson isn't it? Do you think this tactic may have saved me the charge?

Are you sure they got it right?

Your RTW trip presumably will include the US. This means, for your entire trip, you should be entitled 2 bags of up to 32KG each - not 30KG in total. Technically, you've up to 64KG...

Was this CX flight outside your RTW ticket?

My CX flights were all within my DONE4 and yes I have been to the USA as part of my trip.

If, as you say, I am entitled to 2 bags (at 32kg each) I guess I'll be writing to CX for a refund.

It's a paper ticket, right? Your baggage allowance should be listed on the ticket. From memory, it's on the right-most column, where it says '2 Bags' or 'xx_ KG'.

Do you still have a copy of the ticket?

Perhaps others here can confirm whether we're on the right track...?

On a paper ticket it is listed as 2PC for two pieces.

I have an e-ticket (booked by Flight Centre through QF) and now have flight coupons issued while I was in LHR by BA. The flight coupon says ALLOW 30K. Doesn't mention 2pcs but I would assume that for J/D travel.

If it says 30K, it means 30Kg. You are entitled to as many pieces as you like , however the total weight must not exceed 30Kg

If your ticket includes travel to/from North America, I would suggest contacting the airline and getting it adjusted

Some friends, 2 couples and their nephew, returned from Bangkok and coughet recently. Their first ever visit to Thailand.

They bought everything under then sun, tailor made suits, shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, shoes, snake skin boots, latest mobile phones. Anything they found they bought it. Problem was they only had 3 large suitcases between them.

They were charged A$900 between them, I think 90 kgs over limit, and that is after taking things like suits with them as carry on. They had no other carry on luggage as they had no time at BKK airport to buy some bags and take some things out of checked luggage.

I think lesson learned for their next trip. Go over with empty suitcase and buy everything you need over there.

I take a collapsable 'duffel bag' or similar.

On that last trip home it gets stuffed with unbreakable items (e.g. clothing).

Duffel bag sounds like a good idea if you go overboard with shopping overseas.

I generally only travel with around 18kgs of luggage so not a real problem for me.

It happened once to my wife on CX I think whilst travelling J to London. What annoyed her was the really fat person in front of her in the queue who probably lugged an extra 40kg around his waist.

I am really surprised that with the low margins in the industry (and current high fuel costs) that airlines don't make this a strict policy - an extra $1000 per flight would have a huge impact on their bottom line.

You would still charge them $1000 extra per flight even if only flying SYD-MEL or SYD-BNE where 2 additional seats would only cost them ~$200?

Charged for 750 grams excess baggage!

I wrote about this previously under "Excess baggage naz_s in Cairns" (or something like that).
Last August, while travelling with my daughter, Qantas made me pay excess baggage when our combined bags were over by 1.5 kilograms (thats 750 g each).
Funnily enough, I flew that very same route just yesterday, but the family only used about half our allowance. We thought at the time what a pity it is we can't save up unused credits for another time...
Yes, I have been well and truly overweight many, many times and have always met with sympathetic staff.
The people in Cairns are just a little different, it seems.
I fly an awful lot, but as an expat, my trips only involve Australia four or five times a year (hence I'm just a silver), but I do get to Europe often and the US quite a bit.
Never, ever received such rough treatment before or since (well, except for Air France who seem to use the Basil Fawlty school of customer service training, even when you're sitting up the front...)
