This question was being thrown around in a few threads last night: has anybody had success with securing a marginal ASA, after locating an appropriate Classic award and taking a punt with the call centre?

Example: ultra simple dummy booking SYD-ADL-SYD in J

'ASA' (points + pay) - 86k points + $1611

Classic award - 48k points + $80

Wondering what the success rate with stumbling upon booking that kind of thing as an ASA is, after giving QFF a call.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Yes, there have been multiple members state that they have been able to do so over the phone.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Will they automatically quote you the cheapest ASA when calling up or do you have to specially ask for the phone-only ASA pricing?

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

'ASA' (points + pay) - 86k points + $1611

That price is seriously outrageous when you can currently book SYD - ADL or reverse in J for $579 per sector.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Would seem weird when the web ASA is based on the best cash price.

As for cmon005,
I would be calling the special number rather than the regular number, and using the secret phraseword "marginal ASA"

As a platinum would you use the platinum line or the number they gave?

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just got off the phone to book a FASA and a JASA.
Success :D
Identified a P class and U class seat online HKG-SYD
Called 1300 366 587 as per the email
Keyed in QFF number and call was diverted to Platinum desk
Advised operator that I wanted to book ASA's at classic award rates plus taxes.
20 minutes later and seats are booked.
Email in the inbox, seat 1A reserved

Not too stressful to be honest but it would be a lot less hassle to book online as before.
While I was on the phone I asked for a P release for the outbound JASA but sadly the computer said no :(

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

NO success for a JASA ex SIN.
Operator said that there was a problem pricing a JASA out of SIN. But HKG, BKK all OK even with U availability.
Was told to log a problem online.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just to ensure the numbers are in this thread:

Please note that from 26 June 2013 Any Seat Award bookings made in reservation classes X, Z, U or P cannot be made online at qantas.com. To make an Any Seat Award booking in these classes please call 1300 366 587 (dial in +61 2 8222 2430 from outside Australia) between the hours of 0900 and 1700 AEST on Mondays to Fridays. In most cases the points required for Any Seat Awards booked in these classes are higher than those required for a Classic Award in the same class of travel on the same flight

Great to hear you had success. Thanks for detailing the process you used.

Well done.
Just to confirm, were both the FASA and JASA for the same flight (same day)?
Did they book it as one itinerary?

Yes the FASA and JASA are on the same flight (I'm on the FASA and Shrek is on the JASA  )
They are on different itineraries.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Can you or anyone else confirm whether indirect flights are still possible as xASA's using the call centre? Eg BNE-xMEL-ADL
My understanding, and confirmed so far by searching using flightstats, is that they aren't bookable.

Next month before I test that out.
I'm quietly confident it will be, as the route I will be booking is still available as a Classic Award online ( it's not a status run)
There is at least one post on Facebook today of a successful multi-stop JASA to KTA

PF, I'm maybe booking HKG-Oz (hopefully Cairns) next week when the dates become available. Did you get it the classic points reduced to the minimum, which I think under the JASA rules were 60K and were the charges as they were before this change? I think the HKG-SYD-CNS minimum was 50K and about $600+.

Thanks, only natural for the princess to be in F, above Shrek!

Is that on the official QF FB page? Can you post the link?

Yes, 90K FASA plus ~$450 fees and taxes
60K JASA plus ~$360.
Both awards were showing as available as Classic Awards on Qantas.com.au
