Can I upgrade a flight already booked on Hawaiian Airlines from economy to business using velocity points? If so, how many would I need for a one way flight from Sydney to Honolulu? Does Hawaiian have good business class seats? eg..lie flat?

If possible, can I do this well in advance or do I do this a few hours before departure?

Pretty sure it's a no. Upgrade with points can only be used on flights with VA flight numbers. However you can earn points on the flight as long as they have your VA FF number.

I haven't heard good things about Hawaiian's business class...think of it more like a step up from premium economy, but not true business from friends I've had that have travelled with them (and won't again)

Hawaiin Business class from oz is not lie flat, its recliner style. Haven't tried it, so cant comment on comfort etc. Dont know about the points, but recent flights to hawaii ex sydney had dj flight numbers. I'd imagine new brissy flights will be the same.

If you want a suggestion, last couple of flights to hawaii, we ask to sit at rows 46+, if the plane is not full, they block off the last two rows in the middle rows of 4 for crew rest areas, which means you have no one beside you in those centre rows and generally no one in front or behind you, no bassinets at that area either. obviously not the last row as limited recline, this allows my wife or i to move to the seat behind, fully recline and stretch out, makes little difference as you disembark last but its long walk to the terminal for immigration etc, and you pass a lot of people with brisk walk, then at immigration, dont go to the centre lanes, where everyone goes, especially the japanese tour groups, get down the ends, lots less hassles, lines are shorter and your out quicker.
