Welcome, I'm in Perth and have been a member of AFF for quite a few years now. The discussion threads seem to fall into a few buckets:
1. Information sharing on a specific topic eg how to book an award flight. These threads I find most valuable
2. Specific question from a member. I find the question is usually answered then the thread meanders off onto something else
3. Whinges and complaints - sometimes valid
4. Shyte stirring where someone floats their favourite peeve. Might be seat reclining or kids travelling or any other random topic.
The Mods are good and will shut down pointless threads. There are a couple of regular posters I avoid like the plague, you can make your own judgements.

We are still CV plates And Geraldton is now CGG As they have absorbed Greenough shire including Walkaway Also absorbed the town of Mullewa too
Tried to take over our shire as well but it was voted down about 90% to well I guess 10%
Wow CGG.....I need to travel more.
Our City councillors are no more so we don't get CCC plates but we are probably saving with no nosh ups.
AFF can be a little addictive but the aim can be to make it into the First lounge in Sydney or Melbourne or The Private Room at Changi in Singapore using a frequent flyer points redemption ticket.
