Hiya,

My husband and I are both Aussies, long term expats, currently resident in the US (Silicon Valley).

We have been toying with the idea of taking a career break and moving back to Oz. For us that career break would be a bit of an experiment to see how long our money would last, we would be aiming for 5 years. Our intention would be to spend 6 months of the year travelling around.

We recently had two months based in Oz and have to admit we struggled in many ways. It's hard to fit in when you have been gone for so long. However, the hardest thing for us is we want to know where on earth are all the WiFis in Australia? So many bars/restaurants/coffee shops just shrugged their shoulders when we asked.

We have been totally spoiled in the US with credit card sign up bonuses and it seems much easier to earn points here. We recently jettisoned our ANZ/Qantas card because it just seemed too pathetic to even pay an annual fee for. We are used to redeeming for premium long haul travel so not sure how that would work out in Oz.

For us, if we make this jump we know there will be no coming back. Even though we have Green Cards, employment opportunities are unlikely to eventuate as due to our age (late 40s), in the tech world that is considered to be a dinosaur.

Hi there,
Welcome to AFF :) That's a very big decision you have to make and I don't envy you. Hope you enjoy the forum and can share some of your experiences travelling in the US.

Hi welcome. You sound like you know what you want!!Yes the US is good for WiFi, you do get used to it.There is a WIFi app to determine free services. Alternatively get a Ipad and hook it up to 3G!
