OK so after my car deciding to blow up (slight exaggeration; the radiator tank cracked) on Hoddle Street in peak hour last night, I've decided it's time to part ways with my loved car.

Unfortunately, the successor to my model is dingo ugly. There's no way i'd own one of the new ones no matter how sound the actual vehicle is.

Some of you may recall my car is world famous, after being stranded in the Melbourne March floods of 2010 and being broadcast on many overseas media outlets as it was floating down the street. This should increase it's retail value i'm sure ;) (it had a brand new engine and bits fitted courtesy of insurance; would have rather they just wrote it off now after the amount it's cost me in bits and pieces).

So, the old MY06 Subraru Impreza WRX is going to be sold. My current considerations for replacements are minimal, as there's not a lot sub-$60k that i'm interested in. Current thoughts are:

- RX8 (Probably the luxury, maybe the GT)
- Mini Cooper Works (just the standard, not the clubman or anything)

Anyone got any other suggestions? I do not want a 'hot hatch' like munitalP got (nothing wrong with them, I just prefer a sedan-form factor, even though the Mini doesn't really fit into either category).

Am slightly flexible on price, but trying to keep it reasonable. I don't want a slouch (the WRX's i've had have given me the passion to have some power at my command to fly past that bad driver doing 60km in a 100km zone in the right lane) and prefer something that will not spin out if I accidentally let my foot become heavy going around a corner. Not after a big car (have a small car bay and no need for anything other than 2 people 99% of the time), and after something similar in performance to my current car.

Thoughts people?

I'm happy with my Holden SV6, but not for everyone and if your sort of hooked on Mini's, Subaru's and Mazda's might not be up your alley...

If you're prepared to go diesel (roling response is good, but 0-100kph drag not up to wrx standard), how about a Ford Mondeo TDCI Platinum?

Alternatives in similar vein: VW Jetta or Passat?
A second hard (1yo) VW R36 might be a goer?
Skoda Octavia RS?

You're going to need to refine the field somewhat or there'll be such a huge range of possibilities.

+1 for the Megane RS cup 250.. Awesome Drive fantastic handling, great on the track but still good on the roads .... Big bang for the buck.

My recommendation would be for the Golf GTi or the 1yo R32 or R36

While the RX8 are great you may have to contact some dealer to see if there is actually any stock in Australia. It seems that Mazda, Toyota & Subaru have almost no stock of vehicles because of the 'issues' in Japan.

Smaller cars :) I'm looking to replace the WRX with something similar performance (ie, quick off the mark, some power when I knock it back a gear and drop the clutch etc).

What about one of these? I took one for a test drive recently just for the hell of it (I've just bought a new Falcon but thought I would have a bit of fun) I have to say the Kizashi drives very well and is reasonably priced at 40k for the base model.

Never even heard of them:) Not a particularly nice looking car though (same reason i'm not getting another WRX; not my cup of tea).

Not a fan of the 'hot hatch' thing. Golf's are brilliant cars, just not to my liking unfortunately.

Ahh had not thought of that. Will have to have a look!

How about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo or Ralliart? :)
Price unfortunately, once spec'd up. They're getting into WRX STI price territory. And they're certainly not attractive anymore either.

What is it with car manufacturers having lost the plot on design these days? So few nice looking cars in the affordable category :(

By not liking hot hatches and wanting something with a similar performance to my WRX, i'm limiting my options severely unfortunately, but that's the way it is (unless I win lotto :D)

Have you considered a Lexus IS350? Prestige variant would prob set you back about 70K drive-away.

Performance-wise: 0-100 in mid-fives, 80-120 in mid-high 3's, 400m in high 13's. Very respectable.

Image is clearly an issue, and they certainly do not have the chassis / setup to be considered a true driver's car.

I'm a V8 man, so not my cup of tea.

I do like Lexus. It's a nice car to drive that's for sure.

Perhaps i'm just too fussy. I could go with an uglier-than-thow WRX, but I don't think I could ever drive it during daylight hours or where anyone may see me in it ;)

Some searching but...

Small but not a hatch is a pretty small market. What is the price point you're aiming for? And expecting WRX-like performance again makes it difficult, especially in non-hatchback, non-expensive, small(er) than jetta etc.

What about a BMW 1 series (the coupe, not the hatch)?

Wait for the VW Sciricco Coupe? It's coming in early 2012 - not sure if that's too far into the future for you. Looks sick. It's based on the Golf R's engine so I'm sure it meets your needs performance-wise. I recall reading somewhere that it should start at $48 990 RRP.

I'm more into comfort than performance myself but FWIW I find the 1 series' ride quality extremely harsh. And it's going to be replaced by a new generation soon anyway so perhaps the ride quality will improve with the next iteration like the improvements they've made to the 3 series' suspensions to produce a smoother ride. It's otherwise a rather refined especially for a hatch and at its price point - very quiet even at high speeds, great build quality, and very reliable so far *touches wood*.

The car has had teething issues for the past 12 months, so I'd like to dispose of it sooner than later unfortunately. I'd really like a VW. Everyone I know that owns one has said they're 100% happy with them. Not so keen on the BMW though.

You could just go for class and style, ignoring performance.......

Trabant!

WANT! Where can I buy that (is it turbo?) ;) ;) ;)

Gay. Totally gay. Liberace gay.

Better tell that to all my male friends who own them (and their wives).

Seriously, that's like saying only bogans drive Conformodores or Falcodores...

Or that only 'Fully Schick" people drive WRX's

Or that only Asians/old people drive Hondas

Or that people who drive Volvo's can't drive

Or that women can't drive (Tell that to Sabine Schmitz).

I think we can do away with stereotypes. We are in the 21st Century after all:)

It's a joke, Joyce.
