Hello all. I’m new to this forum but a long time FF.

I need help / advice - bear with me on the long winded explanation!

I came across an elusive QF BC Flight to CDG last week - and in my surprise and excitement - I booked it! The points were 1000 more than economy. A win!

So I’m off to France, Italy & UK with 2 weeks to plan my trip.

The problem is the return. I managed to find a PE Lon-Sin-Syd for my dates and booked that to secure a return. (My husband already a bit ruffled about staying at home, not having a return might have really done it!)

Next day a BA BC CR popped up for Lon-Sin. So I booked that. Ekk. I was hopeful, and a bit naive, thinking Qantas would be able to drop the BA PE Lon-sin. Not possible apparently. The PE tix are a package deal. SO - I will let the full PE go, with a penalty of 6000 points. That will mean I don’t have a return from Sin-Syd. Only CR available in my date range currently are QF or BA Economy.

Normally I would choose QF, to get the points and SC (as I’m QC+). However, I have been able to upgrade for $$ at checkin with BA. I don’t think QF allow this.

QUESTION: Should I settle for QF economy knowing it’s very unlikely to score an upgrade (I’m only Silver), or go BA with possibility of paid upgrade. Last time I did this it was approx $800.

Aside from this, which economy is the better choice?

Thank you in advance! A

Economy is economy to be honest.. not a substantial difference.

Check the PE flight again after you cancel.. there is a chance it might go into inventory as individual legs.

Also worth looking at flying into MEL or BNE, and / or cash fares on Scoot or Jetstar (to MEL) who have a decent Business/PE with recliner seats.

Depends when you are going. Quite a few days with at least 1 J classic award to MEL,SYD or BNE. Those to MEL usually on JQ and much the same for BNE To SYD mostly on BA.
Lots of days in March or Novembr and just occasional day in between.
Might have just mean there has been a recent batch release which appears how QF has been doing it. Maybe just wait and see what happens closer to the time you want and if nothing about 2 months out hope for a Y award or a cheap LCC flight.

And a warm welcome to AFF @AlisonP

Thanks Moa - any idea how quickly or delayed the seat could be to go back in to inventory? Ive flown the Jetsar BC from HCMC overnight audit was - all considered - OK with a recline. I think that was a similar length flight. Obviously would prefer not to add another leg ie. MEL.

Beyond help i think. I read your post 3 times and still don't understand.
Hmm - I'll remove the waffle.
I now have a Business class LHR to SIN. I also have my original Premium Economy Lon - SYD. That booking is made up of 2 flights. I have hoping Qantas could seperate them as I only need the Sin to Syd now, as Ive secure a BC Lon to Sin. They can not drop that.

I now need to drop the LHR to SYD. Which means I don't have a flight from SIN to SYD. There's no PE or BC for the dates I need.

Should I choose QF, and settle for Economy? OR Should I choose BA, which has a better chance of Upgrade at check-in?

That being said, I know QF economy. I don't know BA. Which is preferred.

Dr Ralph - hopefully this brings my case back to life???

Thank you for the welcome :). I'm needing the return in a few weeks. Ive been keeping an eye on alerts and I agree, last minutes do pop up - as will mine when I cancel my Classic Rewards Premium Economy soon. I'll check out the J's with the extra leg. I'd like to have something locked in, of course, even if it means scarfing another 6K for a cancellation.

I don’t understand how your flight over could have been only 1000 more points in business class than economy?

SYD-CDG reward is:
55,200 in economy
144,600 in business

I assume that Economy was available only as Classic Plus, while Business was a regular Classic reward.

The only economy available for that period was Classic Plus. Economy from Perth advertised at 124k. I booked business for 125k.

Exactly

It's unfortunate. Mondays 17/3 and 24/3 have classic J awards on BA15 SIN-SYD and they are their new business class seats which are very good.
Yes. I flew in the new ones same route last year. Was great. I’m hoping something may pop up days before but think I need to book the economy back up in any case.

As a backup, can I interest you in some Emirates F, perchance:

Another option is this:

Yeah, not exactly what you were looking for. But better to have a backup which you can easily cancel for a minimal amount of points if your preferred flight comes up. I'd say both are better than flying Y at least.

Which BA flight are you on LHR-SIN?

If on BA15, then the obvious answer (if resigned to flying Y) is to book BA15 for the SIN-SYD leg. That way you know you won't miss your connection.

It's likely the PE seat was a "married segment" (or in this case just a single segment from LHR to SYD). Cancelling would bring it back for a through booking but not for SIN-SYD by itself.
