Hi all
Wife and I are off to Mexico city ( 21-25 April)
Fly out Tue 25 to somewhere

Fly from somewhere back up to Chicago on Fri 28 for conference 29 April to 3 May

I know I am leaving it late but multiple family issues have been distracting. Does anyone have a favourite place in Mexico or Central America or caribean? We would want to have 2 full days without too much travel.

Suggestions gratefully received.

Yours in panic

Zihuatanejo was great but it's a while ago (2004!).

Fly into ZIH.

Don't look at Ixtapa it's like a mini Cancun. Zih is the best of both - some elements of a "normal" town but with amenities for tourists as well. You can go and look at Ixtapa for a day - it's just a resort town and is a cheap taxi ride away.

Merida is also an interesting town on the yucutan and you'll spend a day visiting ruins and a day visiting old town.

Cancun is an obvious answer (as well as Playa del Carmen) but both are uber touristy.

Tulum

You could head to Holbox and hang out with whale sharks (if it's not a tad too early for the season)

Subscribing. Just booked award flights that will give us 5 weeks in the Americas .... the plan is to allocate 3 of those in Mexico.

Outside the OP's timeframe but you could consider heading into Guatemala - Antigua and Tikal are well worth visiting.

If you're in Mexico then it's an easy flight to Havana, Cuba. Highly recommend it especially Vinales and Trinidad.
