In the midst of booking overseas flights for myself and my husband, and transferring points to and fro, something strange has happened. I didnt have enough points for an award booking so transferred some from my husband. I then booked the 2 flights I needed, and the points did not seem to get deducted off my balanced. I logged out and back in several times but still no deduction. I then saw that another lot of flights was available for my husband on same days (which had not shown up when I tried to book 2 tickets on those dates!) so I quickly had to transfer some points back to him to make his booking. Which I did.

Meanwhile my points had been deducted partially. Anyway, both bookings were made and confirmed. A bit later, I came to check both FF accounts. My husbands had 2 lots of points deducted (48,000 and 36000) while mine had only had 48000 deducted and my balance remaining is 25,000. So now it seems I dont have enough points to complete the transaction BUT the flights have already been booked and confirmed.

What should I do? Will it automatically deduct the 36,000 when my balance reaches that? Will I lose my booking? Should I call Qantas and let them know?

Please help!

I'd be calling Qantas. They might let you buy the points rather than canning the booking.

It is also my experience that points are not always deducted immediately. The do get deducted, but seems to be a bit of a lag sometimes.

Buying points may be expensive - $305 for 9,000 points.
You are also restricted to buying maximum 15% of the required points for your award - only 5,400 points for your 36,000 point flight.
So unless they make some dispensation, you may need to pay cash for that one segment.

Welcome Will!

Nice to see you jumping into the deepend with a helpful first post!

The FF account is now 11,000 FF points short of the required award but I cannot see how QF would hold on to the award booking waiting for a FF account to build up enough FF points to meet the FF points required for the award.

As FF points for award bookings do not get deducted immediately the booking is made this must be a glitch in the software allowing additional award flights to be booked with insufficient FF points. Would be interested to hear of the outcome once QF has been contacted....

If you are going to call QF, following JohnK's line of reasoning about the glitch in the software, the first thing I would find out if the bookings have been ticketed, and if e-ticket numbers have been issued. You can either ring Qantas to check, check your confirmation email or go to www.checkmytrip.com and enter your six character booking reference and surname, if it has been ticketed the eticket number should appear here.

If it has, you should be quite happy with the outcome (I'm pretty sure you should be OK if ticket has been issued - others will shoot me down if I am wrong:D), and I'd imagine you'll be fine to travel (unless of course you feel the need to inform Qantas of their error). If not, follow up with Qantas is definitely warranted.

It is quite possible that Qantas will let people go negative, or they may provide other options.

Thanks v8Statesman. Didn't mean to be unhelpful! :-|
I am sure that QF will try to help, esp if you run JohnK's software glitch line.

I will try to be more constructive next time :)

Will,

Welcome to AFF. I believe v8Statesman was actually serious and that your post is helpful. It shows the option of purchase of points as an expensive option and to be avoided if possible and also, you didn't waffle on as some are prone to do.

You will quickly get become used to the sometimes warped sense of humour and purpose on the site.

Thanks all - sorry about the misunderstanding.
Looking forward to getting involved.:)
Hope you get your flights, Jaykat.
