I can't seem to get a straight answer from Hertz Australia on this, so I'm hoping someone might have some personal experience.

I want to hire a car in Chicago, drive it into Canada and then return it back to Chicago around 30 days later.

There appears to be no option on the Hertz booking site to notify of this intention.

Is this something that I notify when I collect the vehicle and is there a separate charge imposed on this?

Is there a need for further/different insurance in this situation?

Thanks in advance.

No issues, no extra charge, no insurance additional. No questions asked. Just let the company know you are going across border.
Have done it several times at SEA -cheaper to fly into SEA + hire car than fly into YVR and hire car and also ALB same reason. Must Return to USA side

Just be aware that if you have hire car troubles when in Canada you will not be able to get any assistance (personal experience within last 6 months with Dollar) as it is a USA contract/rental - I managed to drive vehicle back over border and exchange.

We did hertz Boston to Chicago via Niagara Falls and Toronto- no extra charges.......but be aware of toll roads....if you need to use the etag in the car you are charged a daily service rate on it (even if not used daily), we were lucky we could pay cash but if we had been a month later it would have been expensive as they now don't accept cash on the Road.

Which road(s) don't accept cash deejo77?

I wasn't planning on getting a toll pass.

I assume if you don't have one you can just call up to get an interim pass like in Australia?

For anyone interested, I have just returned from the US and can report on my experiences. Crossed the US/Canada border at 5 separate locations 15 times in total in a hire car with Hertz.

Hertz told me when I collected the car that they made a note of me potentially taking the car into Canada. They said I may have to show the registration details which were in the glove box although this was never asked for.

No extra charges for taking the car across the border and no problems at all to report. Couldn't have been easier.

Saw this thread for the first time, today. Similar experience with Hertz and no issues. When booking on-line, there was a space for me to enter a comment for my USA rental: "Vehicle will be driven in Canada".

Went to USA in July. Hired a car through economy car rentals who organised a rental with Dollar in Minneapolis. Minneapolis wasn't one of the locations where they allowed you to take car into Canada.

Arrived to pick up car and found that it was booked with Dollar but they were out of cars and they gave me a Hertz vehicle. When I checked my receipt I found they had charged me the full rate, not the contract charge. This was later changed to the correct value after some argument.

Asked if I could take the car into Canada and was told that was OK.

Went to Winnipeg through the border from Minnesota and was treated like a drug smuggler going out and in to Canada. Also the entry points are only open in certain hours which you discover when you arrive at the border. Too bad if you are an early morning or late night traveller.

It was an interesting experience.

Have hired through economy for a number of years and have always been satisfied.

Awesome - about to rent in Everett, WA and stay with friends in Blaine - being so close to the border, we'd love to take a day trip to YVR. Done :D. Worth taking a photocopy of the link below your post.

Returning car in Spokane, WA so that satisfies the requirements
