Hertz: Upgrading Mystery Cars

Booked a last-minute mystery car at Sydney airport recently for $25 per day.

Saw they had a few of the "Fun" and "Luxury" cars out the front. When they told me I could pick any car, I asked if I could pick one of them.

They upgraded me for an extra $25 per day.

I don't know if I just got extremely lucky, or what. But $50 per day for a car that rents for twice that much - I was quite happy with that!

Re: Hertz: Upgrading Mystery Cars

The Merc's and Mini's rarely fully book out......

Make of that what you want :P

PS: Do you have any status with Hertz ?

Re: Hertz: Upgrading Mystery Cars

OK, maybe I'm stupid here but where do you actually select a "Mystery Vehicle". Googled this and it says just select a mystery vehicle next time you hire but can find any sign on the booking page!

I think you're right @lovestotravel. I doubt many people feel the need for a prestige rental... from Hertz...

None.

This one I got through vroomvroomvroom.com.au (rental car price comparison website) - although it doesn't seem to appear all the time.

Every time I book a hire car it is a mystery car...

Booked Audi A4 saloon - got given an upgrade to a Volvo Estate
Booked Vauxhall Vectra - got Kia Carnival

Haven't seen this being offered before. Is it new?

That said ... Everytime I hired from Hertz in Australia, the car I received would be a case of lucky dip anyway :)

I think it's been around a few months, but not often available. As you mention, Hertz can be a lucky dip anyway! At 205cm tall, I wan't to know what I'm going to get! Knowing the system, I almost always book premium vehicles at decent prices anyway!

Used this last weekend hiring Sat and Sun from MEL as I was after cheapest rental - and this was cheaper than the small car (didn't want to go down o compact, and the mystery was cheaper than compact as well).

Selected the auto mystery - ended up with a Nissan X-Trail with just under 6,000km on the clock. Much better condition than the XR6 Ford I got from SYD a few weeks back which had 60,000km on the clock and damage to numerous panels!

I think I will give it a go next time I rent from Hertz.

I used to love the mystery flights in the '90's wish they would bring them back.

This has been around for 6-9 months now, but I have no interest in using it as the pricing (when I last looked) was quite high and/or it was SOLD OUT

I rarely get the car I book with any of the major players - one of the reasons I avoid hiring cars.

I always get better than the car I book with Hertz or the exact car when I book a prestige

Going around the UK I booked a Vectra or similar - I got a Kia Carnival people carrier
Visiting the UK (again) I booked an A4 or equivalent - I got a Volvo Estate.

Zurich - Booked a C5 Saloon, received a B Class Merc - Not a real upgrade, but I prefer the badge... ;)
Milan - Booked a C class wagon, received an E class wagon

In the USA, very low mileage vehicles (even for one way rentals) or upgrades (always)

Same in Aus, book a Corolla/Camry and always get something better

I got an X-Trail for a week on the price of a Getz.. I will be doing this again for sure.

I've had mediocre experiences since my original experience. Typically getting the lowest, or slightly-better-than-lowest class vehicle on the lot, and the rates have been "normal", not $25. Not quite the fan I used to be.
