Hi

I'm not sure if this is a new thing for the car rental industry or just Hertz, so may be somone can help me. I recently rented a car from Hertz for 3 days and registered my QFF number with them expecting that I would receive either double or triple points transferred to Qantas. I also assumed that the points were determined based on the total spend (ie. $200 spend= 400/600 QFF points).

To my suprise, Hertz tell me that they award points based on your mileage and rental time (to the hour)!! Why would they do this? It seems commercially detrimental to Hertz to encourage greater mileage (depreciation etc) and less car availability (potentially forgone revenue/opportunity cost). They also would not tell me the formula used (if in fact there is actually one) to calcuate the QFF points.

Any ideas?

IME it is 3 times the base rate (i.e. excludes all the admin recovery, etc etc fees they add on).

(and the base rate is calculated on days and seemingly sometimes to hours)

Dear Mr Gold Member

I am in receipt of a query regarding the incorrect application of Frequent Flyer points on your rental.

Please be advised that Frequent Flyer points are allocated on time and kilometres only and not on the total charge of the invoice.

According to our system and [sic] you have been awarded the correct amount of points. If you have any further queries please contact Qantas direct regarding this".

Hertz are now washing their hands of any further customer service by pointing me directly to Qantas. Shame, my entire company was looking to work with Hertz nationwide however we probably won't be any pursuing this course any further.

Does anyone know which other rental agencies adopt this type of points calculation?

Was this rental in Australia? Note the following:

3 points* per dollar spent ...

*Within Australia, points are earned on time and kilometre charges, excluding GST, insurance and miscellaneous charges. Points are earned per rental overseas. Members must provide their Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number to the chosen car partner. Points are not earned on:
...
Hertz: Rentals that are part of a package. Contract rates.
"Time Charges" are your "Daily" (or Hourly) rates
"Kilometre" Charges are typically those for excess Kms.

e.g. Within Oz, you had a rental for a day with a base charge of $50, ancillary charges of $24 (including GST) and you travelled 300Km where only the First 200 were included and you were charged 25¢ per excess Km ($40) for a total bill of $114, you would earn 270 points @ 3 per $ for time ($50) and Km ($40) (total $90).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Had a look back at a few, and I always had unlimited kilometres, but as an example, one of my recent rentals was 3 days at $38 per day = $114 (+ Airport concession + Rego Recovery + Admin Recovery + CC Surcharge + GST). I got 342 point which was the 114 * 3 points per dollar.

To be fair to Hertz this is no different to the way QFF points are awarded for Avis, Budget and Thrifty rentals.

If I am hiring a car in New Zealand I will credit to QFF but if I am hiring a car in Australia U have started I crediting to VA Flying Club. The last rental of ~$41 should earn me a standard 1,000 VA Flying Club miles.
