I found some interesting results when looking at hire car bookings for the UK in the last half of December later this year.

When I obtain the quote not using my Hertz #1 number (Presidents Circle) I receive a quote of around 370 pounds.

After logging into my Hertz account, the quote for the exact same dates and car type come back at between 800 Pound and 1100 Pound depending on which CDP I use (RAC, QFF, professional organisation etc).

How is it their "most loyal" customers are slugged up wards of over 200%?

So I booked it at the cheaper rate, and then tried to link it with in my Hertz #1 account using the booking reference, surprise surprise no deal, comes up with an error. Logout of Hertz #1 account, and use the booking ref number and surname, guess what booking comes up.

Anyone else have experience like this, or comments? Maybe I should go with Alamo, who I have used 3 times in the past.

With hertz, you have preferences set for various continents. Is it something in your UK profile that has pushed up the price (eg Insurance coverage?)

That is exactly what happened to me a couple of years ago. I can't remember the exact detail, but it was insurance related.

CDP gives you a discount when the public rates are non discounted, if you select "use my CDP" you will always get the CDP rate, however if you dont select that you will be able to avail yourself of the public discounts that exist from time to time while getting your gold benefits.

I had the same problem with a CDP rate last year in the UK. Only just cheaper than the public rates and then found out that it didn't cover insurance (apparently per my profile) excluding the insurance wasn't to bring down high excess, which is covered by our own insurance policy, but ALL insurance so I had a 20,000 pounds excess (replacement of the vehicle). I was then slugged a huge bill for insurance and told that was the only option.

- I found out the next day I could have taken out the CDP "discount" code and paid only the original non discounted rate. No amount of correspondence with Hertz was going to change that calculation.

Now all my hertz mail, email cough goes in the rubbish bin.:p

PS also watch their vehicles classes - they use similar engine size not 2 door or 4 door. We were offered a 2 door sports coupe, no luggage space for 3 people and 4 suitcases!!!

No insurance in my profile or quote

With CDP off, the quote still comes in over 1000 pounds.

I can't link the booking to my gold account, to avail myself of the benefits.:(

If you ring Hertz #1 Club Gold reservations, they should be able to link the booking to your Hertz #1 Club Gold Account - I have done this before when I booked through Expedia.

Would you mind sharing the date, time, location and car type, so that we can see what you're referring to?

This is very common.

Predominantly (in my opinion) the difference is whether Hertz sees you as a UK resident (cheap) or a foreigner (expensive). Pretty much using your gold number flicks that switch.

I've been in the US and booked it all through their US website, then pulled the old "oops I forgot to add my gold number". They punch a few buttons and add it, and the next thing you know its gone from $400 to $550 for the rental.

I also know that CDPs will give you other things like discounts on one way rentals, airport fees and insurance excesses. So you may not pay a one way fee of $150, but your rental cost will be $100-$200 more.

I have had this issue with my Hertz No1 Profile for years. I just ring up and Hertz do the booking on the phone which ends up MUCH CHEAPER than anything I could find online.

The guy in the Australian call centre told me last time that it was because my profile had the wrong rate code saved in it. He told me he couldnt change it, I would have to write to Hertz, I have just never bothered. Dont rent often enough for it to annoy me.

Happened to me too. A 4 door Lexus is the same class as a 2 door Merc.

I disagree with your comments regarding the situation in the US, as generally Aussies get a packaged rate inclusive of all insurances, which is usually a similar price (and often cheaper) than Hertz offer US residents without insurance.

In the US that is because of the insurance conditions rather than locals getting a preference as such, I believe some domestic coverage is applicable to rentals that would not be the case for foreigners, I would have to try to be a local and claim the discount then have an incident and subsequently find out no insurance.

I wonder in the UK example if its the same and it assumes you are a local UK resident, maybe not? With local rentals I just go to qantas.com to check all the companies to gauge what car type is the best value from the right company, although the 50% off offer for Gold members with Hertz for the collections is proving hard to beat with 4 days costing $110 for a Hybrid Camry.

Most US car insurances include hire car cover. So that's why, as Markis says, the insurance is "de-coupled" from the hire rate.

I find that my Gold profile includes the insurance package at a pretty good rate but I try various CDP's until I get the best deal.
