Looks like Hertz have changed their program from a March/April expiry for benefits:

Dear Markis10,
We are pleased to let you know that you have re-qualified for Hertz #1 Club Gold® President’s Circle® membership and your status has been renewed through to 30 June 2012. Please continue to use your current membership card which still remains valid.
As you are aware, as a President’s Circle member, you will receive guaranteed automatic one-car class complimentary upgrades, and guaranteed vehicle availability whenever you need a car – not just for rentals in Australia and New Zealand, but at selected Hertz Gold locations in the US, Canada and Europe as well.
Thank you again for your continued patronage. We look forward to making every Hertz experience more enjoyable and rewarding for you.

Yours sincerely,

Do your benefits start from when you qualify, ie just after your 30th rental, or do you have to wait until the beginning of next year, ie the end of the qualifying calendar year?

Knowing the way Hertz's systems work, its when you let them know if that makes sense, in theory it should be as soon as you hit 30 for the year.

Wow that was a super speedy reply, thanks!

Sounds ominous: "Knowing the way Hertz's systems work"...

It appears they are still assessing it based on the previous calendar year though - at least based on my year to date rentals. Website also still states calendar year (not that their website is current on some things!)

My understanding is that Hertz only assess it once a year, with any upgrade in status prior to then a bonus at Hertz' discretion.

so you're effectively saying that you might as well get the 30th rental at the end of December as you're unlikely to get status recognition before then anyway?

I'm saying that they are the terms according to my understanding. However, there are many examples of status being awarded earlier, usually as a result of calling Hertz (which is what markis10 was alluding to). This cannot be demanded though, as it is entirely at Hertz discretion. If I am wrong about this, happy to be corrected. I spread my car rental over both Avis and Hertz (with the odd Audi rental from Europcar), so have not achieved any status yet (should qualify as 5 star this year, but only at the last minute, not that it's worth much).
