Decided to join up here after lurking a while.

Trying to see how I can travel better on a budget, after enjoying a recent overseas holiday to the States, and seeing if I can turn my becoming-more-regular flying habit around Australia into upgrades abroad. Mostly using VA recently, after a good experience on them a few years back.

Welcome to AFF Vel. Someone would love to refer you to Amex Velocity for you to harvest 80,000 points.

Welcome :)

I'm sure that once you learn more about taking advantage of frequent flyer programs, you'll be flying in the pointy-end in no time :)

Credit card sign-up bonuses are certainly one way to amass points cheaply and quickly. And you don't necessarily have to use the card (beyond any minimum spend requirements for earning the bonus points). The 80,000 points that come with the Velocity Amex card (using a referral link) would be enough for 8 upgrades from Saver to Business on VA short-haul, or 16 upgrades from Flex Economy to Business, as an example. You also get a free return Virgin Australia flight and 2 lounge passes thrown in. And all it would cost you is $349 for the card (annual fee). You'd also have to spend $500 on the card in the first three months. I would personally see it as worthwhile.

Joining up to a few frequent flyer programs, and earning points/status credits for all your flights will help too.

Oh nice!

Too bad it's Amex, can barely use the card.

How so? I have Amex and manage to use it on say 29 out of 30 occasions.
It's great with mainstream grocery shopping, utilities etc.

The utilities in Tas that I use don't take Amex - I wish they did :(

Hello there, there is so much information here and of course plenty of free advice; some of it even useful :D.
