We are about to start planning a RTW with QFF for September 2020 in Business so I may be asking for advice. I may also be asking for assistance with the various acronyms! As a contribution (and not sure which forum this should be posted and it may also have been discussed previously) one of the things we have found is if travelling with a partner or companion is to ensure that the bookings are linked. Although it is a few years ago, we had the the experience that due to a change in bookings etc, our bookings were not linked and even though we had more than sufficient points (and we requested the upgrade the same time months prior), my partner was upgraded from Hong Kong to Melb and I was still in economy. Although we had various discussions at the airport and with Qantas in Australia, I was not successful in being upgraded. As it turned out, my partner had an empty seat next to him in business! Neither of us enjoyed the flight and we laugh about it now but since then we always ensure when travelling together our bookings are linked.

Hi there jbac welcome to the forum!
Good advice about linked bookings.
Although I would add that if you really MUST travel together it's better to be on the same booking.

Welcome, @Jbac!

When you say ‘RTW’, are you talking about a true (ie. paid RTW - aka a DONEx) or a OneWorld Award (OWA)?

A OWA does not have to go RTW. That may give you a lot more flexibility than you may have thought you had.

A word of warning that having linked bookings will not guarantee you sitting together on a flight, particularly with certain carriers and certain circumstances.

In my experience recently, the only way to maximise your chances of sitting together is to be on the same booking and to, if possible, pick/confirm your seats immediately online booking opens.

Many thanks JohnM - appreciate the advice. Yes, it will be a OWA.
