Hi to everyone on the AFF forum. I'd often come across posts on this forum when doing Google searches for info re flights etc, so thought I'd finally get around to joining!

A bit of a belated traveller, I'm afraid, now in my mid-40s and apart from a couple of trips to Singapore and one to Bali (yuk) in the past, have only really started doing any long-distance travelling in the last few years. Went to the Maldives 3 years ago, and would go back there in a heartbeat if finances allowed! First trip to Europe 18 months ago, and off to our first trip to the US later this year. So apologies in advance for any dumb questions I may ask :D and hopefully as I travel a bit more, I might be able to help somebody else with an answer to a question!

Welcome to AFF Jurahn! :)

No such thing as dumb questions, just dumb answers.

Welcome Jurahn!

As tupekastar said, no such thing as dumb questions - it's only dumb if you don't ask it and get yourself into trouble!

Where did you stay in the Maldives? Sister is heading there later this year and I pinched a brochure off her - probably a mistake as now that's on my long list of places to visit!

Thanks for the welcome :)

We stayed at the Conrad Rangali - it was BRILLIANT. Have never stayed at a 5-star resort before, and thought at first we might feel a bit out of place but that couldn't have been further from our actual experience - we had a great time and loved every minute of it.

Nice. Care to give us all an insight?

[Edit: Oops, I replied implying the wrong island altogether

Misread and assumed another place in the Indian Ocean. Do please tempt me to the Conrad Maldives :)]

Tempt you to the Conrad Maldives, Moopere? Hmmm, where do I start?!

The Conrad resort is actually 2 islands joined by a 500m wooden pedestrian bridge - the larger "main" island has the beach villas and deluxe beach villas and running off the bottom of that island is a wooden walkway with numerous "spa" villas - i.e. the American meaning of spa as in treatment spa. There's a health spa there and all the spa villas have a separate room where you can have private spa treatments, massages etc. The other smaller island is all water villa accommodation, from basic (which is still pretty swish) to the mega-luxurious. We stayed in a Superior water villa which was fantastic - sitting up in bed, you have an uninterrupted view out to the edge of the lagoon, you can walk down the stairs from your villa straight into the water and go swimming or snorkelling, or sit out in your spa pool/jacuzzi (which is built into the deck) and look up at the stars.

It's the only place I've ever been where it looked EXACTLY the same at the pictures in the holiday brochures. The water really IS that blue and the sand really IS that white. There are 6 or 7 restaurants on the island serving all different types of cuisine, and the food was amazing - far better than anything I've ever had in any Australian restaurant. Our favourite was the Sunset Grill, which is built out over the water with little decks surrounding it, having a meal there was an incredible experience. They also have an underwater restaurant - we went down there for a look, but WAY beyond our budget to eat there!

They've got all the usual water sports etc, there's an infinity pool on the main island and apparently they've now built another one on the water villa island which is strictly for adults only. The service was impeccable, the staff couldn't do enough for you. And where else can you stay in a 5-stay luxury resort and walk around without shoes for your entire stay - they not only allow it, they encourage it! And every night, we had the amazing experience of watching the manta rays come to feed in the shallow water under the bridge that joins the 2 islands - we watched them for hours, something I'll never forget.

Thanks for the report.

Staff good, food good, accommodation clean and the same as photos, experience good.

This is what we all want to hear and is so often not the case with many otherwise great sounding resorts.

Your report caused me to go and look on the web and my goodness, looks pretty inviting. When did you go? As in what season? I'm thinking of doing my homework now for a trip :)

hmmm, the room rates don't exactly jump off their website at you...

must be there somewhere...

You have to go to reservations.

Cheapest room is a King Beach Villa at AU$641 / day pre-paid. Maldives is never cheap no matter where you go. The Conrad Rangali seems to have a good range of pricing from the above through to insanely priced but beautiful suites.

Thanks for the report.

When did you go? As in what season? I'm thinking of doing my homework now for a trip :)

We went in the first week of March. Had absolutely perfect weather, only rain we had was a storm on our last night that only went for a couple of hours. Of course, the weather can be a bit of a guessing game in a place like the Maldives, so you can never be exactly sure what you'll get!

Conrad does have a good range of pricing, I'd always wanted to stay in an overwater villa and we really liked the look of the Superior ones (especially the spa pool on the deck!). If you stay in the Superior or a higher grade (or I think the Deluxe Beach Villas as well), you get an "Island Host" to look after you, they arrange any excursion or restaurant bookings that you want, and will handle any queries or problems that you have. Our Island Host was able to arrange a late checkout for us on our last day as our seaplane didn't leave until about 5pm.

Housekeeping by the way was brilliant - your housekeeper comes in each morning and cleans the villa, makes the bed, refills toiletries etc and then again in the evening (usually when you're out at dinner) and you come back to the bed made (and often decorated, as well as a little fluffy sea creature toy on the bed!), subdued lighting turned on, the lighting under the water villa turned on as well so you can see all the coral, fish etc underneath and around the villa. Our guy kept the room absolutely spotless, and I had no problem at all with leaving an extra tip for him each day (as it's an American-run resort, everything has a 10% service charge added so some people don't tip any extra) - he certainly earned every cent of it.

We were there for my birthday, and a complimentary cake was delivered to our villa during the day, then we arrived at the Sunset Grill for dinner to find the table decorated with birthday wishes and the chef made me a special (and complimentary) dessert. We got back to the villa to find the whole bed specially decorated with flower petals, it really made my day!

It's certainly not a cheap place to stay (the rate we had included breakfast by the way), but it's been just over 3 years since we went and we still talk about it often and would go back at the first opportunity.

Edited to add: we booked through a travel agent (independent), which I would NEVER do again. Being inexperienced travellers, I thought it was the best way to go. When I became a bit more savvy with researching accommodation, flights etc on the Internet, I realised that when I added up what I'd found (including all flights, accommodation, sea plane flight etc), I couldn't get anywhere near what the travel agent had charged us, and it seems she ripped us off to the tune of around several thousand dollars. Still, we live and learn ...
