Can anyone assist with a third party insurer for rental car excess that can accommodate >$8k of excess?

I have a trip to Queensland later in the year and can get a good deal on a Mercedes through Europcar but the excess is $8250 and from what I can see most of the online insures tend to top out at $4-$6k.

I have a Jetstar Platinum card and Amex Platinum cars but I'm always a bit nervous about relying on their insurances (I have trouble with the fine print).

Any current experiences you can share?

Europcars excess reduction? I always tend to work to the concept that if I have my excess via the insurance to a certain limit and anything over that I have to wear. I work that against a risk assessment that of the hundreds of cars I've rented, I've only ever had two accidents (one hitting a roo which did substantial damage in the '80's and the other last year where a lady hit my rental in a carpark and did $500 of damage).

It does bring up another issue though. A few rentals ago, Europcar upgraded me from my booked car (Micra) to a C class Merc. I wonder how they would view the excess amount in that scenario? I didn't ask for the upgrade, but I did accept it.

I haven't tested this out myself, but they usually list out the class of car that was booked and contracted, and then the class of car that was actually supplied on a different line. So I would imagine the excess to be the same as the original quote.

Yes, they definitely show both the vehicle booked and the vehicle supplied, but I guess how they determine the excess would only be known if a claim was required. Similar (but different ;)) is if you book a vehicle that is OK on E10 fuel but they upgrade you to a vehicle that requires a minimum of 95 RON. I doubt very much they'd agree to you putting E10 in and claiming that was OK as the car you booked only requires the cheaper fuel.
