Located just down the road from the appropriately named Grand Mosque and opposite the Al Bateem executive airport, the Hilton Capital Grand is halfway from the airport to the main city area.

In the area there is not much apart from some very nice parks, a stadium, a defence force academy next door and just up on the next block, a Carre Four supermarket which sells entertainment books for those looking for discounts, specifically for Ferrari world etc, or in my case, topping up the clean sock supply.

The hotel has a nice pool area with a number of pools, it was interesting to see some people making extensive use of the day bed area and sleeping for some time under towels, it was 18 or so degrees during the day I was there.

I was here during a busy time and had booked a reward night, I did not expect much given it was a last minute booking and the town was busy with a convention. I am not sure why but as a Gold member I was given a one bedroom deluxe suite situated on the end of the building sixth floor, the entrance to the two suites at that end was pretty flash!

The room was selling online for 3500 AED or around $1000 for the night, it had a nice living area and guest toilet (which did not flush)

The bedroom consisted of a nice king bed while the bathroom had the larger amenities and a personal favorite of mine, the rain shower.

The bath had a TV and special submersible remote.

It took me a while to locate but the room did have a mini bar and also a Nespresso machine.

One of the interesting things was watching the queue for petrol across the road, and how motorists reacted to that queue leaching onto the 8 lane road. Spot the aussie in the queue.

In fact there were a lot of interesting cars to spot.

The hotel has a small executive club on the 8th floor offering with happy hour lasting 6 until 9, 4 hot food offerings for dinner/snacks and breakfast. I get the impression they don't have too many club guests given the size, however service and food was very good and as I was taking the breakfast early I found the food quality very good.

I went for a walk to explore the surrounds including the supermarket.

It's always interesting to get an idea of what the locals eat and buy, this supermarket had six different countries lamb on sale, the Aussie section being the biggest. While I was out my welcome fruit platter arrived with just enough fruit (my dentist would disagree)

The hotel has a museum of sorts, it's really an art gallery with everything for sale, with prices averaging five figures, leave the credit card in the room.

Reading with interest and looking forward to it - I've been given an 8pm check-out for Sunday ...
