The devastating cyclone a week ago cost many lives and has hit this beautiful country and people hard. My heart goes out to all affected.

BUT, it has created an temporary opportunity for us frequent flyers... I note that in the next month or so the property's cheapest rates have been reduced by about 45% to reflect the lack of demand or simply that its rainy season. But I wonder just how badly the property was hit and whether its even worthwhile going with the discount? I scoured FT but no recent reports, and couldn't find much else on the Internet other than some palm trees felled/halved and other superficial damage. Doesn't sound that bad really and the discount would seem to more than compensate for any shortcomings.

I note that HHD members are regularly upgraded to suites as well.

Any thoughts?

It's my least favourite property in Fiji. I'm personally not rushing to head back there.

One of the mod's partners was over there during the event, and left afterwards. They may be able to let you know what it's like.

Being on the main island I can't imagine it taking long to get back to full speed, even if there was significant damage. The way it is set out (lots of individual buildings) makes it more likely that they could effect replacement structures quickly and easily.

I don't hate it as much as Ewing obviously does, but I wouldn't rush back myself. It's just a typical resort but no exec lounge and it's not a Conrad either. The beach is artificial and poor, but it is tropical and there is a pool...

If it was nearby, flights were cheap and the accom was cheap then I would go for a short relaxing break. Decent diving can be accessed quite easily.

Upgrades- from memory they don't really have suites per se, or rooms. Everything is an apartment I thought, so it's either studio, 1 bed, 2 bed etc. Upgrades don't really mean much in that context, but I could be wrong. Some might have a better fit out, spa or private pool but it's been about 3.5 years since I was there.

The room was fine - don't get me wrong. I just felt that the service wasn't quite up to scratch compared to other properties I've stayed in on Denarau. Only exacerbated by some service recovery comps being withdrawn and charged back to my card after we'd checked out (I ended up getting that rectified). They even tried to charge for breakfast (I'm Hilton Diamond) - no mention while eating at the restaurant but it was on the bill at checkout.

Sheraton is where I usually stay, but as I have status with basically all the big chains on Denarau I'm not forced to choose based on chain loyalty :)

Agree with the above statements about Hilton Fiji. Definitely my least favourite HH resort.

Edit: Forgot about Hilton coughet. So Hilton Fiji is now my second least favourite HH resort :p

I'll be at Hilton Fiji in July for 8 nights. Fingers crossed things go well.

No issues for us at the Hilton Fiji. Great location and service. The only sad thing is that we're off home tomorrow.

To add to this thread.

There is now also a Hilton DoubleTree at Sonaisali Island just south of Nadi. Slightly further away than Denarau but only by a few Klms. I highly recommend it as an alternate to the Denarau Hilton. Great service, friendly staff and only about 2/3 the price of the bigger Hilton.

Looking to book this hotel again for July and it seems there is a new supplement to be paid if you want a ground floor room - FJ$90 a day! Has anyone else come across this?

Staying at the Hilton in Fiji at the moment and compared to last year there seems to have been some enhancements to what is provided:
1. No turndown service with pillow chocolates
2. No mouthwash
3. Coffee capsules for the Nespresso machine have to be purchased. Last year we got 4 new ones each day.
Are these standard Hilton items or are they hotel specific?

All those items are at hotel discretion, although I must say if a hotel supplies a Nespresso machine, I'd find it insulting to have to buy the pods ... If you do it, do it correctly and don't try to openly rip off your customers!
