I currently have a booking with an apartment hotel for an upcoming 5 day stay in Melbourne.

But the thing is that I have Gold status with Hilton and I am now contemplating cancelling the apartment hotel in favour for a stay at one of the Hiltons available. Question is if it is worth it? Will I get anything (except for points) by changing my booking?
Do they actually give you upgrades and other things or am I better off staying where I am?

Anyone have experience in this?

There's lots of experience on here. Hilton MEL seems to give great upgrades to regulars and there is lots of evidence of that. I'm not what you call a regular there, but hardly a stranger either and my last number of stays have been no discernible upgrade. The breakfast is good in the restaurant though. Some golds might be able to advise on exec upgrade possibility.

RoseAnna - Up to you...

I personally find serviced apartments are generally a bit soul-less, and not particularly useful unless you are trying to house a large number of people in one place (e.g. family or a boys/girls weekend).

However generally speaking it is much easier to "self-cater" food & beverage in a serviced apartment. This is particularly attractive to people with special dietary requirements (not me!). I cook regularly at home, but almost never when travelling.

As a general rule I prefer to stay in hotels due to a combination of factors - location, comfort, loyalty benefits (upgrades, breakfast, lounge, etc), as well as hotel amenities / services, etc.

As a HH Gold on a 5 night stay, it is hard to say whether you will get an upgrade of any note. If you were Diamond then lounge access and breakfast would be guaranteed regardless of the room type you book or end up sleeping in.

As penegal mentions, apartments always seem to be bland and dead. When in Melb I do like staying at the Hilton South Wharf and I'm not a member.

Others have covered the ins and outs - you will get breakfast there regardless of the room you end up with. You may not get exec lounge access at HSW as a gold unless you're lucky enough to score an exec room upgrade.

The question "is it worth it?" - I don't know - whats your criteria? Is the price between the two options roughly similar? If so I'd say its worth it. Aside from a few fistfuls of HH points you'll also get nights/stays which will contribute to retaining gold status ... is this something you need to chase or is gold coming to you in some other way?

Yes, this is what I am looking at as well, the points would count towards retaining status and I will probably need that in the coming year.
We will be arriving from a 10 day hotel stay in Tasmania and booked an 80sqm apartment hotel in the CBD in Melbourne. The difference in price would be over $500 more to stay at the Hilton.
I thought I would just throw the question out there to see what other Gold members experience is.

Thanks you all for your replies :)

If you'll be happy in the apartment I probably wouldn't pay $500 more. Hilton Gold is pretty easy to pick up so I wouldn't worry about retaining status.

Mmm. $500 more for HSW over 5 days. If you were to score an exec upgrade then for me, EL access + breakfast would make this "worth it" - but without, not so much - and as a gold at this hotel you can't be sure of an upgrade. A few years ago my response would have been different as this property was known for giving status holders good upgrades.

Have you looked at the Doubletree on Flinders st? Its -not- a Hilton, so, no confusion there, the HSW is much much shinier and has a EL which the DT doesn't. But, having said that, its better placed imho and quite often, though not always, will offer a better per night price, still give you the free breakfast as a gold and still grant you the nights/stays for status requal.

I think you have all answered my question. We will probably be better off where we are and we can buy a lot of nice wine with the money we save from staying at our initial accommodation.

Thank you all for taking the time to give me an answer.

slightly off topic but a HSW question.

can anyone help with which floors the 2 bedroom apartments are on?

normally take advantage of checking in before arrival and have managed a suite 4/5 times. this trip with kids woulld make the 2 bedroom ideal. thanks in advance

A bit late with this reply but the answer is the top two floors. i.e. 18 & 19.

thanks all the same, on this stay we were able to upgrade to a two bedroom on floor 19 via the app on the day of check in.

of note, last couple of stays havent seen the suites come up on the app as available but on check in have been upgraded. has the amount of suites on the app 24 hours before been wound back?

IF 2BR apartments are available we normally get one. Sometimes with online checkin and sometimes on arrival.
